Our home ISP has been blocking access to Proboard for the last few days. Noone else in the family seemed to be affected and I could view everything other than this forum but everytime I tried to come here to find out what's going on and to discuss, no dice.
It seems that Proboard is one of many hosting companies being blocked, though most of the others seem to be related to fileshare so it's probably an attempt by the ISP to control illegal downloads.
I'm here because of a workround - adding :8080 after the .com does the trick.

That's rediculous. Ugh. Sky, you suck. But then I'm all-over furious with a lot of the anti-piracy bullshit going on in the UK right now anyway. My rant could be monumental and legendary on that subject.

Now it's my turn to "Grrr." When I got to work this morning, I realized to my horror that over the weekend the IT staff had installed something called WebSense (nonsense, if you ask me), effectively shutting us all off from access to anything "entertainment"-oriented, such as theater sites, imdb, forums and...yes...proboards! The day seemed endless, but I'm finally home now catching up. Does anyone know whether it's possible to circumvent WebSense? I can't stand having to wait all day to read stuff here. The horror...the horror....

Well, yes and no. You can use a proxy to get around those things, but if it's anything like the one at my job, proxies are blocked too. Not to mention, you're supposed to be working...

Sad but true, proxies and browser-based anonimisers are often blocked in their own right. You may have to do something alternative and invest in a smartphone for break-time browsing if you really have to get online that badly during the day.

Just thought of another way - Wi-Fi adapter, if your're wiling to pay extra for the internet at work. Don't know what it costs in NY, but here it's rather cheap - about 30$ for the device + 6-months subscription.

Even if I could access certain sites on my work computer I didn't necessarily want my employers tracking my usage edited to add: it's been many months since I last visited this site but it's good to be back *waves at everyone*

Thanks for all the ideas. Some of the people I've whined to in person also suggested getting an iPhone. I may have to do so if other measures don't work. Surfing is how I like to use my breaks, not to mention that even some sites I need to fact-check the articles and speeches I write are no longer accessible.

At my job, if they block a site I need to have access to, I have to call my boss and she gets IT to unblock it. I would suggest doing that if they're blocking sites you need to use.

You could try an iPad with 3G connection. That should make the commute more fun.
Sassy, it's lovely to see you here.

Well, I should be thankful for small favors. Enough staff complained about necessary access to this and that, so now the only things that are off-limits are chat forums/proboards. I still want to look into getting a better phone with bells and whistles, but at least now I can go to other favorite sites on my breaks.

I was going to say iPad too, definitely go get that one. The screen on iPhone is too small to be able to read messages without your eyes falling out. An iPad has a much larger screen and is said to be pretty convenient to use and comes with a case that can be folded in a way to support the device so you don't need to hold it up.
