The first full trailer for Django Unchained is out. It's Quentin Tarantino so violent, but looks good. Naturally being released at the end of the year.

So Hugh just needs to put in an "exceptionally outstanding" performance. It's possible and at least his role and performance will be like nothing else in contention. We may get a trailer soon but noone's going to get a proper look at the film until they've recorded and edited the score. It's such an integral part of the film that it would be pointless to have screenings with a temporary score. We have to wait until mid-November, at least.
The same report suggests that Bill Murray is a likely contender but elsewhere (possibly Kris Tapley) that "Hyde Park on the Hudson" is too stuffy and that he might be pushed to "supporting".

I had to read how DDL was the "shoe-in" to win before the movie was actually seen, and now Phoenix is the "shoe-in" but that movie *has* been seen (and I suspect we will be getting a "who will win, DDL or Phoenix" when "Lincoln" is seen). I guess there will be more since Hugh will probably be the last to be "unveiled".

I think we could be hearing about the first real Oscar contender. "Argo" seems to have been very well-received at Telluride. People like it. It's said to be intelligent, gripping and funny. What's more, the reviews make me want to see it.
Up until now, it's been all about "The Master" and a lot if the buzz seems to come from the limited supply. People who've seen it seem to gain some kind of kudos just from having seen it but that will disappear once it's been seen more widely. We're told that the characters are unlikeable and it's hard to work out what it's about. But it's biggest problem may be that people seem to feel they need to see it a second time before forming an opinion. With so many other films to see, why would the members of AMPAS choose a second viewing of an unlikeably film?
I'm trying to work out why I'm developing such antipathy to "The Master". It may be down to the over-zealous bloggers. It may be because there's a picture of Joaquin Pheonix can gives me the creeps. Whatever, the more I read about it, the less I want to see it.

wombat, Nice to know someone else was having that reaction to The Master in the face of all the hype. Whether I will go see a movie is based a great deal on "Do I want to spend almost 3 hours of my life with these characters?". Whether I love or hate them, are they worth the time. For The Master, the answer keeps coming up "No".

In terms of Oscars though, I think Pheonix has good chances at a nod, I wonder if Hawkes can get a nod since his movie is so small regardless of how well i was received. Come Oscar time, his buzz might have faded already. Hyde Park on the Hudson wasn't all that well received so I don't think Murray will be recognized like many were predicting. I'm almost certain LM will bet a BP nod as long as it's good, I'm just watching the Best Actor category like a hawk. Why does it seem like every year that Hugh has movies in contention, it's always an over crowded super strong year? He seems to sit out in years where there's practically no competition like last year.

So far, the critics are loving "The Master" - at Rotten Tomatoes it has eight reviews and an average rating of 9.3/10. I'll concede that it looks like it's getting in and Phoenix, too.

God, I just WISH they show something showcasing Hugh - at least to cement him in the top five (in the minds of the predictors) because some of the sites have him fading. I know, means nothing now, but I hate reading this stuff and at the same time can't help myself. That being said, I bet by the end of the month we see a new trailer. I was hoping to have a "Hugh showcase" but if it's partly with One Day More, like we've read, I don't know how that can be (unless that's just a snippet of it).

I'd honestly rather momentum be built later on than this early on. If its good then it's good, doesn't matter when it's released or when the schmoozing begins but when it's this early on things might fade. Phoenix I think it's safe to assume a lock for lead but I wouldn't say the same for anyone else.

Also talk of PSH going lead. At least we're seeing some different films coming through.
Going by the mixed reviews, the "fiasco" hinted at a few weeks ago looks to be "Cloud Atlas". There are some who love it but others think it's a mess.

There are some who love it but others think it's a mess. I don't know who gets to decide who's in what category (studio? rules?), but I doubt they would put PSH and Joaquin P. in the same Best Actor category, I would think it would split the vote. I'm wondering if they would put JP in the Supporting category since it's a bit weaker and he would have a better shot at winning.

I need to keep you talking - you're only two short of a huge number of posts.
There's always such a big fuss about new contenders that we miss the ones that drop out of the race. I'm thinking of films like "Lawless" and "Killing them Softly" which landed with a fizzle. Any others?

I so want Hugh to at least get some nominations for Les Miz. I am really excited for this movie. R Crowe said that the big wigs saw a work-in-progress cut of it and he is getting a lot of excited emails.

The Oscar contenders are usually divided between the "critic's movies" and the "Fan Movies". Les Mis may be in the enviable position of a movie that fans have been waiting for forever and critic's will love because it is so different that any film recently seen. At least I truly hope so.
