Arrow is being discussed in the Pan thread and I need to add it to my watch list. But currently I'm hooked on Stargate Universe. I never really watched the earlier Stargate series but this one has a big attraction in that it has Robert Carlyle as lead. The stories make too much use of "will they make it in time" and deux ex machina (aka mysterious alien technology) but Carlyle's flawed scientist is fascinating. I've liked Carlyle for a long time and particularly like the way he can alternate between playing flawed good guys and sympathetic bad guys. In this show, it's not clear which he is. Add to this that the apparent good guy (the miliary commander) is also flawed and it gets more interesting. I'm only just into the second and final season but I'm guessing nothing gets resolved and it all gets left in limbo because it got cancelled.

Stargate! I have been a fan since...the beginning? I personally prefer the "middle one", Atlantis. It is not perfect, but I just loved the characters in it and it was a good sci-fi. It´s been in my life since I was 14 so when SGU got cancelled, I felt really sad. But SGU was actually pretty great. It got really good in Season 2, when they went even further from the original concept. I don´t know what did people in SyFy think to cancel it but to replace a good sci-fi with wrestling is not a good way to promote a channel which is, well, focused on sci-fi Right now, I am just hooked to "On Location" thread at one Doctor Who forum. I made a promise to myself that I will watch the whole classic series til the Anniversary and I did it! It took me about two years but I did it. And now I think I am officially doomed for the rest of my life because Doctor Who is so much different when I know the classics now. Also, I am excited that such a fantastic actor as Peter Capaldi is the next Doctor so I am curious about anything that is going on on set Those TV Shows lists are getting longer. Every time I come back from some convention, I have a list of TV shows I just NEED to watch, because "they are the best ever". I meant to watch The Good Wife but I just don´t have time to start a show with so many seasons. Right now, the only currently airing shows I am watching are Grimm and Continuum (when it comes back). I occassionally do "marathons". However, Babylon 5 marathons can be very exhausting (no matter how many times I watch it, I cry in the end, more than before)

Oh, hooray for the TV Shows thread, wombat. I've often thought of starting one, but then always managed to squeeze whatever references into some discussion that was already going on. I agree with you, Lenka, about the list of TV Shows that I'd like to watch being so long. I was browsing in Best Buy yesterday and there are so many good shows out there, and not nearly enough time to watch them all. Ha. My husband and I are really enjoying this new McConaughey/Harrelson "True Detective" show on HBO. No surprise that MM is still in his comfort zone of playing a character with a Texas/Louisiana drawl, but I do kinda like him in this. The story is being told in a very interesting way. I didn't know, until I looked it up this week, that the series is an "anthology", so these two characters are only going to be in the 8-episode first season. It'll be a whole new story with different characters next season. Which means it's like a mini-series, and it seems that TV (cable and premium, at least) is starting to do more and more of that. I loved "Top of the Lake", which was of similar length. The short run allows them to attract some big-name actors. I wouldn't mind at all if Hugh would do something similar. LA times Review: 'True Detective's' slow and steady pace a winning formula

i"m absolutely hooked on "True Detective". Love the way it is being told in flashback. Harrelson and McConaughey are good actors but neither one has really "stretched" beyond that comfort zone. Natually this is why all the McConaughey hoopla is aggravating me. They bypass Hugh when DDL practically phones in the job and then turn around and go all gaga over MM ... give me a break.

I have to agree. I find TRUE DETECTIVE mesmerizing. The writing, the direction, the cinematography, the perfect matchup of actor to character all create a haunting mood that permeates each enigmatic episode. No relying on pathetic, annoying gimmicks such as weight fluctuation, outlandish "groovy" period clothes and cars, just a well-constructed, taut story. Would that could be the case with all of Hugh's projects.

Just got caught up, post-Olympics, on True Detective, with a 3-episode viewing marathon this evening. Holy shit, I already thought the show was good, but it ratcheted up to a whole new level of intensity starting in episode 4. So many other shows these days have ensemble casts with multiple story-lines, and I think the fact that this one just focuses on these two characters - at different points in their lives - means it is able to cover so much more ground in each episode. The writing is just amazing.

True Detective is only 8 episodes, but these 13-episode drama series on Netflix, cable & premium channels are all pretty good to outstanding, and he did say (when talking about House of Cards) that he would consider doing one. I hope he gets the chance. Selfishly, it would be cool to have a show with Hugh to look forward to each week for a while.

Yes, I wish Hugh would do a high quality limited-run series like this. The quality of this show is better than most theatrical films. I watched it for 3 hours straight last night and never once got bored or tired, and I do tend to doze off in front of the tv, LOL!

I posted on one of the movie sites that McConaughey deserved the Oscar for True Detective not for Dallas Buyers Club. TD is a major achievement while DBC is a been there done that rehash.

I keep hearing great things about it. I guess I will have to watch it then...after it ends, so I can watch all at once. I am so glad that US shows started in many cases with the 8/13 episodes per season format because those crazy, 22 episodes long seasons, are exhausting I remember my first Babylon 5 marathon...I think I only took breaks for sleep and even ate before the screen, it was crazy Everytime I come back from a convention, I bring back a long list of "must see" TV shows. But I am going back to some older UK shows now...rewatching Sapphire and Steel Also, I watched Leverage recently again. One of the funniest and best shows about thieves

Getting a late start to the day, I happened to be home while the "Good Day New York" morning show hosts interviewed someone I'd never heard of, Clive Standen. Turns out he's in the cast of the History Channel's VIKINGS series, which I've never seen. As I was puttering around, I heard Greg Kelly, one of the hosts, say to Standen, "You remind me of Hugh Jackman," so naturally I stopped what I was doing and paid attention. I didn't see any great resemblance. Then co-host Rosanna Scotto said, "And he looks a little like Jake Gyllenhall, too." Has anyone seen the VIKINGS series? Hey, maybe this guy could star in a remake of PRISONERS--and play both leads.

It's good if you like swashbuckling and family conniving. Season two just started but I haven't decided if I want to keep watching it.

I read today that newly crowned McC will not be returning for a potential second season of TRUE DETECTIVE. Reportedly it was designed, much like AMERICAN HORROR STORY, to be an anthology with a different set of regulars each season.

Reportedly it was designed, much like AMERICAN HORROR STORY, to be an anthology with a different set of regulars each season. Yeah, I'd read that was the plan when I looked up more about the show a few weeks back. My guess is that is the only way they were able to attract movie-star talent like him and Harrelson. How serendipitous for HBO that he won the Oscar in the meantime, and as was mentioned here the other day, it seems like doing the show may have even helped him win, as ridiculous at that seems. A new and different form of Oscar campaigning.

I watched the first two episodes of Aaron Guzikowski's The Red Road. Very good, if a bit grim and slow to build. But I'll keep watching. I can invest six hours. Some similarities to Prisoners, including a crazed drive down a darkened road. And two main characters - one a cop - who are working together but not entirely. This time it's the cop character who is in the deeper struggle to keep his family together, bending rules along the way. Sort of interesting.

I think my addiction for Leverage returned. The last episode aired some two years ago and I am making a rewatch. I saw seasons 4 and 5 only once so I am enjoying it as for the first time. I love all the characters, they are so funny and the chemistry between them (and the actors) is incredible. If you like stories about thieves (this is a Robin Hood kind) then this is perfect
