Love the Winter Olympics - hate the NBC commentators.

Awful news about the young luger who died in a tryout accident earlier today. I hear the Opening Ceremony is being dedicated to him.
A thought comes to mind: I thought the Olympics is Hugh's favorite sporting event. Why is he (pick your choice depending on whose tweets you believe): watching people sweat at Carnevale back in Rio or picking up Ava from school in NY instead of freezing in Vancouver?

Hugh was back home in NYC today and at an event tonight - it remains to be seen if he will be in Rio in two days.

I will watch the Opening today. It was at 3:00 A.M in the morning here and I wouldn´t be able to stay awake that long. Fortunately, most of the events will be in the evening (for us) so I can watch some of them. I am looking forward to the Ice-Hockey, Figure Skating and for the first time, I am going to watch Speed skating because we have two very hopeful girls there. And also some skiing. I am a fan of winter sports, maybe because I am not a winter person and I am not doing them. ;D That accident is really tragic - the man was only 21 years old But it is soooo dangerous when I see it - it´s a crazy speed and almost no protection.

I just saw the opening ceremony. Very, very beautiful and impressive. The artificial in Beijing was so annoyingly precise that it didn´t feel right. This one was similar to Sydney, that I liked very much, too. And I have to admit, I was suprised that group of our athletes was maybe the eight biggest. I guess Ice Hockey players are doing a lot.
But it is a big irony that most of the Europe and the USA are suffering under a lots of snow and Vancouver is without a snow.

I am one of the ones that believe Bejing Olympics was best ever, imagine all the work put into it to make it the way that it was. That's what I call effort executed right.

A military discipline, no mistakes allowed...I have no doubts people in China were excited and put a lots of effort into it. But it reminded me too much some efforts and "let´s pretend to be happy" events that used to be here. It´s really hard to explain, because, naturally, I have a big aversion to a comunism. People in China, that worked on the Olympics, did it for a greatness of China and blah, blah... I am not one of those who would prefer nations not to attend Olympics in China - they should have considered the human rights problem way before the beginning and the attempts with an Olympic torch and all were stupid, and it was very late. This in Canada was obviously done with a love, and I believe volunteers really volunteered - those in China got days off at work, were offered some money or it was in some kind of a programme they had in factories and state companies. We used to have the same stuff here. Not during Olympics but other events that should have showed the world how is everything OK behind the iron curtain, that we are happy, no problems with human rights... That´s why I didn´t like the China Opening. Sorry for that long explanation and I hope it makes sense.

Eh me being part Chinese, gave me reason to doubly like it I suppose since I totally know what each metaphoric thing stood for and all that. The history of the nation, politics, all of it I'm very familiar with. And then comes the pride thing as well, but I understand when people don't like something. It's all a matter of taste and opinions that are manifested through the way you were raised, etc.......
It meant a whole lot to China because of all the crap that's gone on in the past, it was that big one moment to prove as a country how united the people are and all that. But then right afterwards, the lead poisoning stuff, and a bunch of other things didn't help China very much, hahaaaa. But yea, those reasons you wrote are just pretty much how China works as a whole, the culture is a whole different animal then that of American culture or whatever else. I grew up with a very similar upbringing of everything needs to be perfection, and even when it is, you don't really ever get praised, it's an underlying sort of appreciation, and everything is pretty much about face and saving face.
But like I said I understand if people don't like it, I just thought it was pretty amazing. So did not like the commentators getting things all wrong though, lol.

Bringing it back to the topic, I think it's EXTREMELY wrong that NBC showed footage of the Lugar's death and saw a ratings spike because of it. That is so so so wrong.
Oh oh and Vivanl, happy New Years to you too!

Just because you HAVE the footage does not mean you should show it. Have some respect for the tragic circumstances of someone's death. I was very glad to hear Bob Costas say during tonight's coverage that they would not be showing the footage again at any time during the rest of the coverage. Good!

I don't think the footage was shown by the BBC but my son had seen it on the internet. We did get a minute or so of the luger from an earlier run which I found disturbing. It's rather shocking to see someone full of life just a short time before their death. I don't know where you draw the line. I've seen the 9/11 footage many times and I know many people are dying but they're nameless and I can't see the individuals.

We saw it here, too. They showed it in the Olympic News but warned before it. In TV news, they stopped it in the middle. I saw it in the Olympic news and it was really, really ugly. Horrible. I can´t imagine how must have his friends and family feel. I am looking forward to tonight - our speed skater will be in a final and she is in an extremely good shape. So hopefully it won´t go away tonight. It´s too bad that some people were injured before the Olympics It is a real bad luck - they are preparing for so many years and then are injured before the most important sport event.
