Go and see. It's not a "boy" film. There's action but so much more. In sci-fi terms, it's more Anne MaCaffrey than Star Wars. Worth seeing in the theatre. We opted for 3D but thought it would have been almost as good in 2D. It's gorgeous. I liked Sam Worthington and it helped that I was seeing the character rather than the actor.
Before the film, we saw a trailer for Sherlock Holmes and that looked just like any other PG-13 action film of the last 10 years. Actors making quips whilst stood on props in front of a green screen. Explosions, fights. Perhaps a superior version of LXG. Avatar isn't like that.
I'm now going through reviews and such. This comes from the comments at Hollywood Elsewhere:

Reviews have been amazingly good, as people were expecting the worst like with "Titanic," Cameron proves everyone wrong again it seems. I'll probably end up seeing it at some point. The first trailer sucked booty but the more recent ones after that look good.
And I'll recommend a movie too! EVERYONE GO AND SEE PRECIOUS!!!!!!!!!!! I have NEVER in my life cried so hard watching a film, but it was very very well made and pulled at heartstrings, really shows you how there's so much wrong in the world. The performances were beyond mind blowing all across the board.

I've seen Precious mentioned with awe for months but it's always sounded like a downer. Maybe I should make the effort.
Avatar is probably the most engrossing film I've seen for years. It works. I want to be 10 foot tall and ride dragons.

Well I'm not going to say Precious isn't a downer because for the most part it is, lol. But it's very uplifting in a way and so true to real life struggle of people living in places like Harlem. The fact that families like that really exist is the biggest downer of all, but yea the way the movie was constructed hit me in all the right ways. I haven't been so struck by a film in a long long long time. It's certainly not easy to watch and Monique's character is beyond cruel but it's definitely worth it.
Your "I want to be 10 foot tall and ride dragons" comment alone makes me really really want to see it.

It's too late for me to attempt at researching, so I'll just ask: what is Precious about?
Avatar, I haven't read more critical praises about a movie for years. It's been defined as a history-making movie in terms of special effects. Some say, on the other hand, that its significance is being exaggerated, but there is no doubt it's the next milestone in James Cameron's career, one that will be awfully hard for him to surpass next time.

In the terms of a story, it´s not that original. Dances with Wolves in space, maybe. But the world of Pandora is really beautiful. You can watch it without 3D but I think it makes it very special. I felt a little dizzy during some shots but it´s just me And I suddenly felt like ten-year old again, when I read my first fantasy book and wanted to have my own dragon. I think it´s more as a fairy-tale with a man, a woman, a bad-guy, some moral aspects, set to a different planet. It´s a perfect combination for me as a sci-fi geek ;D

Saw Avatar today in IMAX 3D. Holy cow, what an experience! Gorgeous! And the theater was packed for a Friday afternoon!
The movie itself - it was okay. I enjoyed it for what it was, but IMO it was too long, and hubby didn't like it at all. I heard him a few times saying "take a breath!" It was pretty much non-stop action. But Pandora was breathtaking.

Precious is about an obese, illiterate girl in Harlem who's mom is abusive in just about every way, and sort of her life as she's enrolled in a new alternative school and faces a few life changing ordeals, both good and bad. It's heartbreaking, it really is to see something so horrible and realize that stories like that happen every day, almost unfathomable. I should be seeing Avatar soon, soooooooo looking forward to it. And looks like they're looking at an 80M opening weekend, though the east coast storm might be a factor.

Oh ya ya and "Up in the Air" is a movie I REALLY want to see as well. It's been nearly sweeping the precursor awards leading up to the Oscars and many are predicting it's between Avatar, The Hurt Locker, and Up in the Air for the big Best Picture win. "Up in the Air" seems like a movie right up my ally, and I look forward to checking it out soon.

Hurry up and see Avatar and then you can enjoy all the silliness about it across the web.
It seems like the reaction in the fanboy crowd is very mixed with quite a few complaining about the story. Then there's the conservatives who hate the "messages" they see in the story. But all that is balanced by the Oscar bloggers who seem to love it and are out there defending it. That includes David Poland, Kris Tapley, Jefferey Wells (!) and Anne Thompson.
The box office numbers are a bit different, too. It's the first big blockbuster that's a "must-see" in 3D and although it's the widest ever 3D release, that limits the number of screens. I'm sure a lot of theatres have 3D screenings that are sold out but plenty of capacity for 2D. People may be prepared to wait rather than compromise.
One of the reason I liked it was it remined me of the SciFi/Fantasy genre of the 1970s. I grew up with the worlds of Andre Norton, Anne MaCaffrey, Sydney van Scyoc and Mary Gentle (all women!). Maybe I should unpack some of my old paperbacks.

I like the idea of Sherlock Holmes and I like RDJ and Jude Law. If only the trailer didn't make me think of LXG. The reviews haven't been too bad so maybe it works.

I admit, Holmes is about the only movie I really actively want to see at the moment. It looks big and shiny and silly and pretty and that's about all I have the capacy for at the moment.

If it wasn't for RDJ, I probably wouldn't be very interested in Holmes. I've already told my fam we have to go see Avatar so that's definitely going to happen. I would love to see "The Lovely Bones" but definitely my have to sees at this point having already seen "Precious" are, "Avatar" and "Up in the Air" and "The Lovely Bones and "Holmes" comes in the I'd like to see it but don't really care if I missed it category.
I really wonder if "Avatar" will recoup it's money, let alone make profit. $500 million for the production and advertising costs is a hefty amount and since ticket prices are so high because it's 3D and IMAX, I wonder if that will turn people away from seeing it multiple times. A regular ticket price here if you go Matinee is like $6.50-$8 bucks or if you go after matinee $9-$12, a regular Imax 3D ticket is anywhere from $14-$18 bucks.

Precious, The Lovely Bones and Up in the Air are all January releases over here. It's typical that we go through months of rubbish and then a glut of good movies. Maybe I'll just catch "The Hurt Locker" on DVD instead.
I think Avatar is one of those films that a lot of people will want to see again in the theatre. You get your money's worth. Whereas "Up in the Air" and "Precious" sound like they would work as well or better at home.
What about "Nine"?

I don't want to see "Nine", I don't like Nic all that much, and Kate Hudson I absolutely dislike, lol. And from the reviews, it's as if there's a disconnect in the movie, you never feel anything for DDL and so that doesn't appeal to me at all. "The Hurt Locker" and "A Serious Man" are two movies I really want to see but will wait for the DVD.
Yea "Precious" and "Up in the Air" will have the same affect on the big screen as on the little screen if you watch it at home, lol, that's why Avatar is what I've been pushing my family to go out and see since it's definitely a "big screen only" type of affair. I just don't know if people will shell out like $50 to see it 3 times like they would watching another movie in a regular theater like twice as many times for that amount of money.

Here in McKinney, TX you can see a matinee for $3.50. No idea what regular is but I'll bet it's cheaper than what you've just listed. No wonder folks wait for the DVD.
