Just saw LIFE ITSELF, the documentary about Roger Ebert. What a lovely movie, very very well done. I know that "populist" types of documentaries don't often get notice at Oscar time, but I hope this one does. There were quite a few laugh-out-loud moments, mostly about his early life and his interaction with Gene Siskel (I'm not convinced they ever did like each other). And it was unflinching in portraying his health battles at the end. But I was surprised at how many movie clips they showed, a real feast, which was appropriate since movies were his life. Great musical tracks as well. Two thumbs up. (I know there is NO WAY I'm the first person to include that in their review of this film, in fact it's probably all over the place, but I'll leave it anyway).

I saw LUCY with my daughter today. Meh. The "science" in it was ridiculous, and it had all these implications that increasing human knowledge somehow decreases people's humanity. The premise (random person absorbs superdrug by mistake, giving her super knowledge and abilities) was somewhat interesting - if it were a standard action movie. But instead it went all metaphysical and deep, and it was just too ridiculous for me. But my daughter liked it, and she can make me see so-so or even bad movies for the rest of my life, since I owe seeing Les Mis to her.
What I found most interesting was noticing that Scarlett Johansson has crooked bottom teeth.

I saw Guardians of the Galaxy and it's very enjoyable. A little too much fighting for my taste but it's fast and funny with good effects. I can't remember much of a plot, though! It's a bit like the later Star Wars but also the 80s Flash Gordon. Also, lots of cheesy 70s music. We sat through all the credits - so many digital artists - to see if there was a post-credit scene and there is. Not that it meant much to me.

Just caught one on Cinemax that I had meant to see in the theater and missed. It's a British film: About Time. Rotten Tomatoes audience rating 81% and it deserves it all if you like gentle, sweet, well written and well acted movies with a truly positive message without being sick sweet. Tim learns he can travel back in time but only to change events in his own life .... sounds perfect right? Not quite so easy when you are a bit of a doofus if a kind and loving one. You will enjoy each of his trips and the changes they bring. www.rottentomatoes.com/m/about_time/

But then again, I am a geek and this movie was meant to be fun I loved that music. Zoe Saldana is great, especially in the fight scenes.

Saw "Get On Up" this evening, the new James Brown biopic produced by Mick Jagger among others, and was surprised during the final credits to see that the screenplay was written by Jez Butterworth (with his brother). It was an okay movie, told in an interesting, non-chronological fashion, but the musical performances were the centerpiece, as would have to be the case in any movie about Brown. It reminded me in some ways of Jersey Boys (um, except for the QUITE different music, LOL), mostly in the way they somewhat glossed over his many flaws - drug addiction, domestic assault, tax evasion, etc. But an interesting story nevertheless, with an excellent cast.

Went to see The 100 Foot Journey today. Sweet movie. Good acting. Nice happy ending. It's not Chocolat or Babette's Feast but worth your time.

Speaking of Cinemax, as we were a few posts ago, I see that it's showing Swordfish this evening. Don't think I've seen an uncut, no-commercials airing of it before, it's usually on late night cable. Looks like it'll be circulating on the various Cinemax channels for a few weeks.

Well, I finally got to watching some James Bond movies I missed and I have to say, despite their apparent "failure", Timothy Dalton´s "Licence to Kill" was one of the best Bond movies. They tried to do vengeful, cold-blooded Bond before Daniel Craig but I guess people were not ready for it. And even though George Lazenby was indeed terrible, his Bond movie is the best, imo.
Roger Moore had the worst movies. Silly even for James Bond and I don´t think he worked as James Bond either.

Not sure if the broadcast versions you've seen have the untouched Helga scene but the times I've seen it they do some clipping. Swordfish is worth owning so you can FF (fast forward OR freeze frame) to the Hugh scenes at will.

I just also notice when things are actually on so I can casually "stumble across" them!

FINALLY got around to seeing "American Hustle" this evening and enjoyed it more than I expected to. I'm still not a fan of Bradley Cooper, at all, (and people say Hugh was too shout-y in Prisoners!?! wtf), but I thought Christian Bale and Amy Adams were quite good and even Jennifer Lawrence. And with all the hoopla about those cast members, I guess I'd missed the fact that Jeremy Renner also had a prominent role. He's one of those guys who, to me, always adds something to whatever films he's in. Most of all, I loved the music and not being able to predict how it was going to turn out in the end.

Cooper was too shouty in Silver Linings Playbook, too. I am not sure if some people just want to see what they want...
I rewatched Dead Poets Society. As a tribute and of course, it is a brilliant movie. I just cried a little more in the end.
I also rewatched Roman Holiday. Everytime I feel miserable, this movie helps. Perfect movie, perfect acting, perfect ending.

I finally got to see Guardians of the Galaxy last night. What a blast. I loved it. I hadn't heard my kids laugh so much at a movie since they were much much younger. The humor is what surprised me, and that the funny lines weren't all reserved for (shout-y, LOL that Bradley Cooper shouts a lot even in his voice acing, but at least it was appropriate to the character here) Rocket Raccoon. Chris Pratt was excellent and played a wonderful charming hero, but the depth of character of Dave Bautista's thuggish-looking Drax was a big surprise to me. Zoe Saldana's character bored me, but she was the only weak spot. And of course Groot stole the show, heh. CGI was obviously a huge part of it, but it seemed to me it owes more of a debt to Star Wars than its Comic Book Movie brethren. Loved it. Well deserving of its 92% RT rating, IMO.

Also, it reminded me Farscape on so many levels. Now I know where the authors of the show took their inspiration I also think they learnt how to sneak some jokes for non-family audience and sneak it into PG-13 rating..that joke about Jackson Pollock was hilarious I finally watched "Good morning, Vietnam". I remember I saw it once as a kid and I was bored and now I know why. It is not a movie for kids in any way. Despite the cheerfullness of the main character, it is full of a depression and hopelessness of the situation. And nothing has changed since Vietnam, apparently. Propaganda works everywhere even these days...

As soon as it started I realized I'd seen it, though I'd forgotten the name (and apparently the whole plot...). Love this movie.

Next month our local art house will have Tracks www.rottentomatoes.com/m/tracks_2013/. Rave reviews and a true story about a 2,000 mile trek across the Australian Desert. Might as well get acquainted with a big chunk of the continent.
