Has anyone seen The Hurt Locker? It's engrossing and a good war movie for people who don't really like war movies. It's about a team of US Army bomb disposal specialists coming to the end of their tour of duty in Iraq. It almost feels like you're a fly on the wall watching these men go about their business.
Moon is a small independent SciFi film directed by Duncan Jones, son of David Bowie. It reminds me of a 70s sci-fi film, along the lines of Dark Star. Worth renting if you like this kind of thing. (I do and I liked this but I wasn't as enthusiastic as many of the critics)
District 9 was the $30m south african sci-fi movie that was a big in the summer with audiences and critics. I'm about half way through and I'm not understanding why it got all the attention.

Best movies of the year for me thus far are Precious, Avatar, Up in the Air, and An Education. Oh and of course Up but that was a while back.

I want to see An Education but I missed the theatrical release and have to wait until March for the DVD. Maybe I'll make the effort to see Up in the Air in a few weeks when it's released over here.

I thoroughly recommend ''An Education". I didn't know anything about it when I went to see it because my first choice wasn't on at the right time, but I absolutely loved it.
I can also recommend "The Lovely Bones", but found I was a bit distracted by the resemblance of the villain to Daniel Craig in ASR. Probably just the blonde moustache and blue eyes, but for me the likeness was uncanny.
Did anyone else notice the likeness ??

Last week I saw Up in the Air which I thoroughly enjoyed, though good as it is, don't really understand all the Oscar/award buzz around it and George. Thoroughly enjoyed It's Complicated which has quite a few laugh outloud moments. Love Meryl Streep, not so Alec Baldwin (and didn't need to see him nekkid), and wish there had been more of Steve Martin. And The Blind Side was very good, touching. Missed seeing Precious because at the time I wasn't in the mood for a depressing movie, but I'm sure it'll come around again when it's nominated for Oscars.
I'll see The Lovely Bones because Stanley Tucci is in it. Otherwise, I'd wait for the DVD. For a reason I can't put my finger on, I don't like Amy Adams but I might see Leap Year if there's nothing else of interest when I feel like a movie.

Oh Hugh, Hugh....

I just saw Up in the Air today and liked it very much. I think George Clooney did a great job, but I agree that it wasn't Oscar-worthy. The role wasn't that demanding. But I do recommend the movie. I liked It's Complicated, but not as much.

I came out of Up in the Air wondering why everyone fusses so over Clooney. I admit to not having seen his entire movie catalog but I think he's a one note actor. I see the same person every time I watch him. The total opposite of Hugh. I lose sight of Hugh 90% of the time in his movies and that's saying something considering how well we "know" him.

I totally agree about Clooney and "Up in the Air", definitely did not understand all the hoopla surrounding that performance. It was fine but definitely wasn't demanding whatsoever, and in a way he was playing himself, which is also why I never couldn't see Clooney in the role. The movie was great though, definitely liked it.
"An Education" took my by surprise, I didn't really know what to expect and the way the story went, I felt it was extremely sincere and a true testament to teenage ignorance and denial. The whole exploration of "wanting to fit in" and Mulligan was great in it.
I'm going to see "The Lovely Bones" when I have some time, as well as "The Blind Side" and "Brothers".

I just caught up with an overlooked gem, TWO LOVERS. That's the movie Joaquin Phoenix was supposedly plugging when he appeared on Letterman looking like Grizzy Adams' grandpa. Phoenix was remarkably good playing a man trying to get over a failed relationship by juggling two women. Very appealing story and heartfelt performances, including Gwyneth Paltrow's as the primary object of Phoenix's desire.

I liked "It's Complicated" too. New Yorker had a cartoon of two people coming out of a movie theater. The caption was "I think I liked Meryl Streep better when she wasn't having so much fun." LOL.

Just read an article about Ethan Hawke's new movie "Daybreakers" -- Claudia Karvan (Ruby Vale in "Paperback Hero") has a role in it! Not a movie I care to see, but wanted to share that info. in case any of you are going to see it.

Good tidbit Sue. I'd love to see her again. I'll file that away for a DVD look-see later on.

Just recently I've watched "Brothers" and didn't really care for it, I thought it would be a lot more intense then it actually was. And last night I saw "A Serious Man" and liked it a lot, it's kind of an interesting study of faith and religion.
"The Lovely Bones" and "It's Complicated" are coming up next for me.

Oh and a good movie I forgot to mention this year is "500 Days of Summer", a very very good/well done romcom I think.

Oh and a good movie I forgot to mention this year is "500 Days of Summer", a very very good/well done romcom I think. Forgot about that one, too. Totally agree; highly recommend. We didn't see it when it was released, but we caught Valkyrie on DVD last night. I mention it only because if anyone decides to see it, be sure to watch the attached documentary by Kevin Burns. We both liked it better than the movie.

Just read there's going to be a Mamma Mia 2, which is going to be a prequel, focusing on Meryl Streep's character only younger.

I didn't care for it, except for the scenery. It was the only time I've ever felt Meryl Streep was miscast.
