I enjoy listening to Glenn Close's rendition of Norma Desmond in Sunset Blvd although I always pretend she's singing and dancing with Hugh. Not sure I've ever heard Meryl Streep sing. I guess I should watch Mamma Mia someday. It's hard for me to believe it made more money worldwide that Les Mis, but I guess the songs are iconic in their own way (I can never help but hum along to an ABBA song), and people do like their fluff!

I liked the movie Mama Mia but not the singing other than Seyfried and Baranski. Streep was really camping it up with fists grabbing the air etc. I guess proving she could do it, but as much as I respect her as an actress singing something like Last Midnight and Children Will Listen is way beyond her. I saw Close in the original production of Barnum and have heard the recording for Sunset Boulevard. Unless she just doesn't want the role, she would be excellent.
Looking at this paragraph and thinking about Mama Mia, Christine Baranski wouldn't be bad either. Well established on both stage and screen if not as well known as either Streep or Close.

I didn't like Mamma Mia and I thought Meryl Streep was pretty bad both for her singing and her overacting. However, I also disliked the filmed stage show of Into the Woods because I thought Bernadette Peters was dreadful. This is probably not a musical film for me. I'd prefer Shrek.

McConaughey is 43? Huh. Why did I think he was much younger? Yeah I didn't realize he was close to Hugh's age. And I thought Jake G. was older than 32.

McConaughey is 43? Huh. Why did I think he was much younger? Probably because until recently, he usually played the adolescent-minded, shallow guy. When Hugh was at WAAPA, McConaughey was acting alongside Jason London, Ben Affleck, Cole Hauser and Parker Posey in the classic DAZED AND CONFUSED. I admire McC's choice of roles in the past couple of years, even if he does tend to overuse that drawl.

That's unfortunate. I like rom-coms. Not everything silly and escapist has to be made of 90% fart jokes, you know.

I'll put this here since I don't think we have a similar thread to "Hugh's Acting Partners" for his past directors. Guess I could have put it in that thread because of Russell, but I think it fits here. Some apparent conflicts over Aronovsky's "Noah" after some poor test screenings for Christian and Jewish groups. www.theguardian.com/film/2013/oct/16/noah-darren-aronofsky-russell-croweSpeaking of blasphemy (or whatever the complaints are), seems they could have skipped the gratuitous slams on "The Fountain" at the end of the article. But I guess calling it a "turkey" and a "vanity project" supports the tone of the article, which seems to imply that Aronovsky is acting like a prima donna.
