Perplexed Tolkien geek here : They announced the cast of the Hobbit recently and Richard Armitage is in the cast. Some of you may recall fantasy casting discussions of this film a year or more back and a couple mentioned Hugh would be great as Bard the Bowman, so when I saw Armitage, I thought, "hmm, good choice for Bard." But no, he will be playing Thorin the Dwarf King! Anyone else familiar with Armitage having a "what the..?!" moment?
Talk about needing some extreme angle shots!

My secret Tolkien geek dream was Hugh playing Thranduil in Hobbit (the king of Mirkwood elves and Legolas's father). Bard seemed to me as a typecast for him and not that interesting. That wouldn't been going to come true anyway, but as they are now starting in February, with Wolverine, no chances, sigh...

Oh, trust me, I WTF'd quite heartily, but then the guy who played Gimli was 6'1" so the height isn't really an issue. Hobbits are a little shorter than Dwarves, and Martin Freeman isn't exactly short to start with. With all the forced perspective and over-sized sets it'll look fine in terms of comparative height, I'm just assuming there's gonna' be a LOT of padded armour to get the width. Either that or eating a lot of pies... Aiden Turner's in it as well. Luv him too.

Aidan Turner is quite lovely. It would be fun to see him, one day, playing an actual human being.
