I didn't feel it either, Pat. And the crazy part is, I was doing my daily brisk walk across the Rutgers campus! I attribute my cluelessness to my wearing those sneakers that supposedly work your calves all the time. They really do keep you rocking (I can't stand still in them!), so that's probably why I didn't feel any difference. When I got back to work, they said the building had swayed, and some people had panicked. A co-worker was ready to send out a search party for me, she said, LOL. Fortunately, no reports of injuries so far. I hope our homes' foundations are OK. Hubby works in a decrepit old building in Princeton and he didn't feel anything, although my sister lives in Monroe (not too far away) and she posted on Facebook "was that just an earthquake? "

Mother Nature's at it again. Those of us on the East Coast are in for a walloping this weekend, especially Sunday in the Mid-Atlantic (NY-NJ) region, by the potentially very damaging Hurricane Irene. New Jersey Gov. Christie has already declared a state of emergency in advance.
Batten down the hatches. I hope it turns out to be more hyperbole than truth. Stay safe, everyone.

On Sunday, I have one girlfriend who lives in South Beach flying from Miami into Philadelphia to meet her cousin, who lives in Cranbury, NJ so they can fly to Italy from Philly. And I have one boss who is flying back from Punta Cana (they got there right after Irene hit on Tuesday) into JFK.
What are the odds that either of those flights aren't cancelled I wonder....

As Ellen said, stay safe. I hope that it turns away, but that's not looking real promising right now. Tomorrow we're going to bring in all of the lawn furniture/planters, etc., and make sure there's nothing vulnerable in the basement. I hope all the work turns out to be unnecessary. I just saw a couple on the news who were scheduled to be married on Nag's Head this weekend. Too bad for them! We were at a NC beach wedding in June -- lucky for them they didn't plan an August wedding.

I'm at the NJ shore now and not going anywhere...yet. People are in a mass panic for a storm that is not hitting until Saturday night/Sunday. It's only Thursday.

I hope everyone on the East coast safety! Kind of unfortunate this huge hurricane shares my name, hahaaa, there's other things I'd rather be affiliated to.

I don't know where you are Mindi, but I just read that there are mandatory evacuations issued for LBI and Cape May starting 8 a.m. on Friday. www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2011/08/evacuation_orders_issued_for_c.html

Tomorrow is supposed to be beautiful, so I'll see where the storm turns and decide when to leave. I'll probably go back home tomorrow night, then just come back down here Monday. I went to the Univ of Miami, this is old school for me LOL. I know enough to be safe, get out in time, but not get caught up in the mass hysteria that the news can be.

They're evacuating the low-lying areas of NYC and mass transit (buses, subways, Long Island Railroad and MetroNorth) is being shut down tomorrow night. They are asking all NJ residents in low-lying areas to voluntarily evacuate, at least today. My boss has a JetBlue flight from Punta Cana (where he just missed Irene) to JFK Sunday - well, he HAD - JetBlue is cancelling flights and I'm sure others will follow as I doubt anything will be flying.
I wonder if Hugh would have had to tape up all his windows in his apartment if he was here - that's a lot of glass.

How often does sort of thing happen? Hurricane season: The Atlantic hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30, and they are named by letters in the alphabet, starting with A and alternating between men's and women's names. So because this one is Irene, that means there have been eight other storms before this, probably tropical storms that petered out (see list in link). The names start when they are tropical storms and once they hit a certain criteria wind/rain-wise they become hurricanes. They are rated on a scale of categories, 1-5. They usually form in the Carribbean and depending on the track can hit the East Coast of the US. Usually Florida and North Carolina are affected. Hurricane Katrina formed in the Bahamas but instead of going up the east coast it went towards Louisiana and New Orleans. Katrina was a cat 3 and look at the damage it did. I think Irene is projected to be a 1 or 2 by the time it gets here. Hurricanes weaken as they get over land and strengthen over warm water. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Atlantic_hurricane_seasonHurricane Gloria was the last big one in NYC in 1985. thelastword.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/08/25/7476003-new-yorks-last-big-hurricane-in-85I just hope I don't lose power.

No point, tape does not work, and that's probably really thick glass to begin with, unlike the glass from say a shop window or a house. That's why they board up windows. Tape will not keep windows from breaking.

So just five times in the last 160 years for New York (I knew about further south, but I couldn't remember hurricane warnings for New York). I hope this one loses power before it hits the shore. It's the same one that hit Richard Branson's house, isn't it?

The Red Cross and FEMA say to board your windows or use hurricane shutters. It's not really going to matter if say, your roof gets ripped off, or your old New England beach house collapses into the ocean. If you live in a trailer park, you're pretty screwed. I was living in Florida during hurricane Andrew - flat Florida was even flatter after it hit a trailer park or two.
