Just wish it was during the week so I wouldn't have to go to work since there isn't going to be any transportation! Then they would HAVE to close the office - unlike during the blizzard when the subways and other modes were still running so the office didn't close, so if you were snowbound, too bad, you had to take a vacation day. Everything is closing down at noon tomorrow.

The Red Cross and FEMA say to board your windows or use hurricane shutters. It's not really going to matter if say, your roof gets ripped off, or your old New England beach house collapses into the ocean. If you live in a trailer park, you're pretty screwed. I was living in Florida during hurricane Andrew - flat Florida was even flatter after it hit a trailer park or two. My folks are snowbirds and their Mobile Home (we prefer that to the trailer reference ) got squashed in Hurricane Charlie . No fun. We've had our share of fun in NY over the years too. I have to return prematurely from my retreat in the country (Pat's) tomorrow morning before they shut down mass transit at noon. Damn you Irene!

There's also a mandatory evacuation for lower Manhattan at Battery Park City, among other "low-lying" NYC neighborhoods. Hugh, see what you're missing?

They're evacuating the low-lying areas of NYC and mass transit (buses, subways, Long Island Railroad and MetroNorth) is being shut down tomorrow night. They are asking all NJ residents in low-lying areas to voluntarily evacuate, at least today. My boss has a JetBlue flight from Punta Cana (where he just missed Irene) to JFK Sunday - well, he HAD - JetBlue is cancelling flights and I'm sure others will follow as I doubt anything will be flying. I wonder if Hugh would have had to tape up all his windows in his apartment if he was here - that's a lot of glass. No point, tape does not work, and that's probably really thick glass to begin with, unlike the glass from say a shop window or a house. That's why they board up windows. Tape will not keep windows from breaking. True. The only thing tape might do it prevent shattered glass from flying inward and that's a big MIGHT.

Well so far I still have power and cable but many do not. A lot of the beaches on Long Island and the Jersey Shore are gone. The photos on the news are incredible! Downtown Manhattan is in danger of flooding depending on the storm surge. They even mentioned the possibility of the West Village where Hugh lives being flooded. And it's not over yet.
Looks like I have a "hurricane day" tomorrow since mass transit isn't going to be back until sometime late Monday (so far). And I have jury duty Tuesday LOL.
Hope everyone else is ok.

It's still very windy out, which concerns me because of possible power outages, but the rain seems to have abated. So far, just a little water in the basement (first time in 21 years in this house!) that we wet-dry vacuumed out, and a couple of trees lost a branch each. Could have been much worse. Hope all affected are OK.
If Hugh and family had been in town, they'd have been under mandatory evacuation, I think. Judging from the maps I saw, their apartment is in Zone A. Of course, I don't think they'd have gone to a public shelter (there are no 5-star shelters, LOL). I'm sure they'd have just checked into a more suitable posh hotel.

My sister just called - they just got the notice to evacuate so I may have a family of five, a dog and a cat in my little condo. She's about 15 mins. from me on back roads. The dam near them is in danger of breaking and the cops were going up and down the street telling everyone to get out. She doesn't know how she would get here since a lot of the roads are closed and she doesn't want go to the shelter they set up. So we'll see...

Where I am in Phila is fine, no loss of power or flooding. Low lying areas that flood when it drizzles are of course flooding again.
From all reports at the AC/Ventnor/Margate shore, no problems there either. The usual flooding, but that has receded and no loss of power, beaches look ok too. I'm headed back down tomorrow!

Probably not going to work tomorrow since NJ Transit won't be running (and even if it was, I'm sure there would be massive delays) and I don't think the subways will be running by tomorrow morning. It will be interesting to see if my office opens, as of right now they have no power! There was a fire in the basement of the building apparently, but if there's no subways/LIRR/NJT, people can't get to work.

Hope everyone is alright. I'm Thankful we had no damage. We were lucky to keep power, the pool overflowed, lots of tree debris around and major flooding from the river 2 blocks away. There's a brook about 100yds away that runs near our homes, keeping an eye on that as well since the river isn't expected to crest for another day of so.
Again I hope everyone is okay *hugs to all*

Nooo fun. I was lucky to get my power back after 12 long, hot and stuffy hours. I really feared we were looking at days. My poor folks in CT were told not to expect it before Sept 3. They are not up to that so I found a motel for them to go to in Mass. tomorrow.
I had just settled down this AM to watch a CD with what was left of my laptop power when I looked out my window and watched a 50 foot tree keel over and fall 10 feet short of my car.

Wow, emtee, feel your pain. Had my siding blow off in '93 winter superstorm in VA Beach. Right now, my brother and his family living in Old Saybrook, CT are still reporting power outage via cell phones. Their house in Gloucester, VA barely escaped flooding. Prayers that everybody in Irene's path comes through with minimal damage.

You guys got hit pretty hard. I'm back at the shore and all is well down here. At least you got power back and avoided damages. Good you found your parents a place. A friend of mine in North Jersey is out until about Sept 4th.

It's about 90 minutes from my office, so I'm on vacation until the 6th! No fist pumping allowed....well, depending on whose doing it.
