Eddie is making me cry.... He was so freaking excited! And that hug with Cate and excitement when he got on the stage!

Eddie is making me cry.... He was so freaking excited! I think he was truly surprised. Even though Eddie won most of the precursor awards, Mike Fleming at Deadline thought Michael Keaton would win because of his "fabulous Golden Globe speech" (for Picture/Comedy) and Eddie would lose because of "Jupiter Ascending." WTF do they have to do with anything??? GET TO BEST PICTURE ALREADY SO I CAN GO TO BED!!!

Blah. Seriously, Birdman was NOT the best movie I saw this year. It was well-executed and well-acted, but I enjoyed Boyhood, Whiplash, Imitation Game, and Grand Budapest Hotel more. Lesson: Make movies about show biz. Well, at least each of those movies won something. I like it when there is a distribution of wealth.

Reading this, I am glad I didn´t stay up all night. When Oscars enter the 21st century and will allow the live stream of the show, I may consider it I tried to watch some streams, but those were slow and the only one that worked (Popsugar) had two most annoying hosts I have ever seen. They kept talking about what actresses wear and kept telling us it was raining...so, I am going to watch it now

I just read a nice article in Czech dedicated only to Hugh, how it was iconic and why he won´t host the Oscars again because it is "difficult to beat himself".

It seems his performance as host is becoming more beloved with the passage of time. Of course I think he could do well again, but much as with last year's Tonys, it'd be hard to live up to his own legacy. Would still enjoy it.

I've paid so little attention to this Oscar race that it was a shock to discover it was today/yesterday. I haven't seen any of the contenders, but I was blindly rooting for Eddie. I also felt a bit sorry for Benedict Cumberbatch, but he'll have his day. I hope Eddie doesn't get hit with the Winner's Curse and continues to make interesting films rather than being diverted into blockbusters.

Hard for me to feel sorry for Cumberbatch, he's so omnipresent these days, from blockbuster franchises to thoughtful films and performances like this one. His performance as Turing was breathtaking and would have been deserving of a win in some years. (and yes, it seems like he should have his day at some point but you never know with these things).
And I don't mind Eddie winning one bit, even at a young age, and even in a "physical transformation" Oscar-bait sort of role like this one. It's a great story, he got the part, he killed it, and he won. Fine by me. He's obviously a versatile actor and seems like a really solid, humble person as well.

So I watched it...every year, I try to hide a cynical side of me but I am glad I didn´t stay awake for this one. I think by the time lady Gaga sang, I would have fallen asleep (it was about 4:30 in the morning here by the time she came). I think it was a solid opening as long as they sung, and I think that Jack Black should have stayed and host instead I like NPH but I feel his hosting gigs are getting a bit stale. It was visually great but once he started telling jokes, not everything worked. The joke with Octavia Spencer went way too long. However, the joke with underwear was actually great, in the context of the scene. Why didn´t Hugh get a chance to do this? I would much rather see him Also, until these days, I won´t understand why Hugh did so little actual hosting. He presented about three times, sang twice and that was it. And he can be witty and funny, as proven at Tony gig in 2006. Anyway, I am happy for Eddie. I saw only a Birdman and I have nothing against it winning because it was about time that an actual *movie* won. It was an experiment, a play with camera, uncertain project and a true movie art form. That´s what it is about. However, I hate how they cut off the "less important" winners after about 30 seconds. I know that nobody in the audience probably saw any of those foreign movies (yes, movies are made also outside the US) but how the Polish director had to yell over the music was disgraceful. But they had two pointless music numbers to make the programme too long...well...

Can someone explain what happened when that stupid lockbox was opened? I was taping as I was watching but the DVR stopped at 11:30 (of course just as the big awards were coming up) and I didn't realize it, so I didn't get the last part of the show, and I wasn't paying attention (not knowing the taping had stopped).

It was just a list of unpredictable events that had occurred during the course of the evening ... "Terrence Howard will get unusually emotional", etc etc. So it ended up being some sort of "magic trick" in the end.

You know, a lot of people blame the host for ratings, one way or the other. I think that may be a small part, but I think a bigger part is the movies that are nominated. Most of the movies nominated were independent movies that the large masses have never heard of. Now if something like Titanic or Avatar were nominated, the ratings would have been huge IMO since people had a rooting interest.

Too many headlines saying the ratings drop was the lowest since 2009 when HJ hosted. If blockbusters hold the majority of best picture nominees, the host has a chance of getting viewers.

I wonder if Fallon being on another network would prohibit that (NBC v. ABC). I seem to recall reading something like that in the past. And then of course Fallon (or whoever) would have to agree to it. It also just dawned on me that in Les Mis, all of Hugh's big three co-stars (Russell, Anne, Eddie) have won Oscars. Hugh, c'mon already. Maybe he'll get one for playing Wolverine 1,000 times. I'm also a little surprised that Hugh didn't congratulate Eddie in a tweet.
