Fully prepared to not go to work for at least two days (I assume the office will be closed tomorrow since there's no transportation, have to wait until 7:30 to call in for the announcement, at least I won't have to take a PTO day!). I'm dreading the thought of possibly no power - I have an electric water heater so that means no hot water/hot showers! And heaven forbid - no internet access!!!! Stay safe everyone. uuuh, take care, guys! It's storming here too.. More than 50 planes can't land at Sheremetievo airposrt at the moment... Sending good vibes to all of you.

I'm dreading the thought of possibly no power - I have an electric water heater so that means no hot water/hot showers! And heaven forbid - no internet access!!!! Stay safe everyone. What's driving me nuts is that with the all the reporting on preparing for the storm and all the closings and canceling of things, everyone seems to think this storm is coming overnight tonight and it's not - it's tomorrow night into Tuesday morning that the Hurricane makes landfall in NY/NJ. It's just going to rain and be windy tomorrow. It's Tuesday into Wednesday that's the problem. I just checked the National Weather Service - the storm, as of 8:00 pm Sunday is 485 miles off the coast of NYC - moving at only 15 mph - which is why it's taking so long to get here and why it's going to last a while too. It could pick up speed when it makes landfall though. The rain ahead of it is fooling people something fierce. I have a laptop charger for my car and a mifi device - but if I lose power, I doubt I'll be hanging out in the car for an Internet fix. I can live without.

Some of the beaches in NJ are already getting storm surges and flooding and the storm isn't even here yet. Plus all transportation is going to be/is shut I bet for at least two days (subways already shut down) and parts of NYC near the water (including Battery Park) have a mandatory evacuation (whether or not they leave is another story). Broadway shows were cancelled today and tomorrow. I'm not that close to the river so not worried about water, I just don't want to lose power for days.

I'm pretty close to the Hudson River - but I live uphill from it, so hopefully we don't have massive flooding. That's the only thing I'm really concerned about, since my mom has all-day chemo and radiation tomorrow and regular chemo and radiation the rest of the week, and hospitals NEVER close.

My river is the Raritan River (every time I hear it mentioned in the musical "1776" I get a good chuckle out of it as I go over that river every day on the train). Good luck to your mom, Kristen and stay safe. Look at the huge storm Hugh is going to be missing....

I'm 2 blocks from the Passaic River and have a brook running next to a neighbor approx 50yds away. We've been able to avoid floods in previous years, escaped any damage from Irene last year but Sandy is pretty wild May everyone be safe!

Nice post, Jamie, and thanks for the translation. I remember my mother and several of her cousins, all in their late 70s and 80s, holding hands in just that way and reeling off several verses several years ago at a Scottish family reunion. It was nowhere near New Years, but it was an amazingly touching moment given that the extended family was widely dispersed, and it seemed quite likely that many of them would not see each other again (indeed, 2 or 3 have since passed on). Interesting story re the tall dark stranger! Happy New Year to all the denizens of this board, thanks to Kristin, the mods, and all who contribute to the fun discourse.

Just wanted you to know how much your hard work is appreciated. Brava! I'll second that. Wishing you all a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year from the land downunder where it's been 2014 for several hours and an early morning beach swim is needed to help revitalise my body after a night of fireworks and champagne !! Looking forward to another year of being "enchanted" by Australia's favourite expat,so thanks again to all who make this forum happen. Cheers

Some good family news, and a (very) slight damper. Daughter was nominated, along with her fellow "Tonight Show" writers, for an Emmy for Best Writing for a Variety Series. She's over-the-moon excited about it and was looking forward to hobnobbing with the starry crowd at the Aug. 25 ceremony. Then she learned that the Emmys now rotate certain award categories to its Creative Arts Awards held the week before the Big Show in order to make time for the newer reality show awards (yucch). This year, unfortunately, it's her category's turn to be so relegated. Oh, well. But she's still buying a new dress!

Plus, I'm sure there are still quite a few high profile types at the Creative Arts Awards. I seem to remember they award the various Guest Actor awards at that ceremony (assuming that hasn't also changed).

They do come up with great stuff for Jimmie.

Thanks for the nice words, Sue and Joan. The Fallon folk have some pretty stiff competition, though, such as the usual favorites The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Either way, it's exciting.
