Thanks for the nice words, Sue and Joan. The Fallon folk have some pretty stiff competition, though, such as the usual favorites The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Either way, it's exciting. She deserves to win just for that awesome NPH dis. Congrats to your very talented daughter, Ellen! Sending good luck vibes her way.

Derek Jeter, I love you..... This video made me cry. And weren't you just 19? When did you hit 40? Love the faces of the Red Sox fans, the blacked-out Mets faces, and the random celebrities.

I love that, and the part I love the most is the one in the restaurant with Joe Torre, Andy Pettite, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Tino Martinez.

My 19-year-old nephew told me Jeter is the only Yankee shortstop he knows. Ugh I'm old. And when did the Houston Astros move to the AL? I have to pay more attention this season, I don't think I know 3/4 of the players in these lineups. I miss the days of Derek, Paulie, Tino, Andy, Mo, Jorge.....

I've been on the Jeter bandwagon since he became a Yankee. I love that all he ever wanted to do was be a Yankee and that is what he has been. Just a nice guy, playing baseball, and being a regular (albeit ridiculously paid for it) all around guy. Yay.

Some good family news, and a (very) slight damper. Daughter was nominated, along with her fellow "Tonight Show" writers, for an Emmy for Best Writing for a Variety Series. She's over-the-moon excited about it and was looking forward to hobnobbing with the starry crowd at the Aug. 25 ceremony. Then she learned that the Emmys now rotate certain award categories to its Creative Arts Awards held the week before the Big Show in order to make time for the newer reality show awards (yucch). This year, unfortunately, it's her category's turn to be so relegated. Oh, well. But she's still buying a new dress! Catching up after being away so I'm just seeing this -- congrats to your daughter and her team. They really are good! Good luck to them.

Thanks, Cath. Actually there's an extra "argh" to the story--personally speaking, anyway. Daughter said since she's currently single, if she were attending the televised main Emmys, she'd have taken me as her plus-one. But since her category will be handled off-air the week before and attended pretty much by technical types, she's taking the alternative, non-plus-one option of flying first class. Ah, well. At least only she has to buy a bew dress.

Reading a review today, I came across an acronym I was totally unfamiliar with: FUBAR. Anyone ever encountered it? After looking it up, I learned it means "f**ked" up beyond all reason/repair."
You learn something new every day.

You learn something new every day. I was familiar with it because there was a dorm or living group at my alma mater that went by that name and had that meaning. The school administrators must have decided it wasn't worth fighting over it, at least by the time I was there. I know the word "SNAFU", which originated during War II, if I'm not mistaken, had a similar acrynom origin - "Situation Normal, All F**ed Up". Ahh, here it was. This was from the year before I got there, but the fashions are .... unmistakeable. Note: I did not live there, it was a men's dorm, if that's not clear from the photo, LOL.

BTW, ouch about your daughter choosing a first-class air ticket vs being accompanied by her mom to the Creative Emmys. But ... flying first-class is a nice treat. She probably figured she can see you any time. Still.

I didn't know the meaning of FUBAR, either. I was familar with the use of "foo" and "bar" as variable names by UNIX programmers but never knew why.

Hugh's words:
Hugh Jackman @realhughjackman · 22m So sad to hear about the passing of the great dame Elaine Stritch. One of the most talented women to have graced the stage and screen.

Random Item #1: My daughter's "Tonight Show" writing team lost to that of "The Colbert Report," which she was expecting to happen. She had a great time at the Creative Arts Emmys anyway.
Random Item #2: I just learned that the age gap between Megan Mullally and her hubby Nick Offerman is almost the size of Hugh's and Deb's: 12 years. You see that gap mentioned a lot in reference to the Jackmans, but I don't think I've ever read anything about the disparate ages of Megan and Nick, who are also pretty famous.

Thanks for the update, Ellen! I actually thought about her last weekend and tried (briefly) to sort out if they'd won or who had won their category but then opted to wait for a report. Glad to hear she had a fun time. I'm looking forward to watching the Primetime Emmys next Monday. Interesting point about Megan and Nick - dunno, maybe it's because they are not quite as famous as Hugh, maybe it's because neither one is known for their "looks" (ugh, those stupid "he could have anybody" comments), maybe it's because Megan still has an active career on stage and screen, while many people don't even realize Deb is an accomplished actor. Who knows.
