I really hope that once more clips featuring Hugh are released, he will be on the minds of Oscar analysts and voters. I don't think a lot of people know what he's capable of, and unless you've seen him on stage, a lot of people in the industry still don't seem to be aware of his musical abilities. I think he's pretty locked in as an action hero in Hollywood. And it's fair to say that Hollywood likes to keep actors in a particular box.

Annette P On the one hand I wonder if they will release any tidbits of him singing "Bring Him Home" since that's one of Valjean's big/famous numbers, sort of like they did with "I Dreamed a Dream" - on the other, I wonder if they want to keep it a secret until the movie comes out. I imagine in the next trailer we may hear him singing part of "One Day More" since there was some kind of off-site orchestration of that for the trailer.

When I see a lot of posts predicting/defending a particular actor, I know that there's been a call to arms on a fan board and I get ready to enjoy the silliness and pretty much discount the praise. Remember all the Alfie Boe fans when Hugh was cast. Not that I think anything you posted was unreasonable but if there are half a dozen similar posts, it's less effective.

Right now they are going by movies that have been seen and of those that haven't, the "street cred" of the actors involved (Washington, Hopkins). So it sorta makes some kind of sense that Hugh's dropping off the list since he's never been nominated or won while the others in sight-unseen movies have been so they automatically get put there when it's an end-of-year movie that has some kind of Oscar buzz. Will be interesting to see how it shakes out after Les Mis is seen, but naturally Hugh's possible chance is in a competitive year!

He's in that list which is in alphabetical order. Guy Lodge's comments are ok. There are some people who thought he lacked the gravitas for the role but they also seemed to be the same people who had no idea that it's a musical.

I think the comments have been reasonable concentrating on the acting qualifications rather than the giddy fan variety. Agree that it might look like an invasion, but that may be just what it takes to get some of these "professional" critics to wake up and actually consider someone who isn't yet considered among the "great actor" class despite an impressive filmography with major directors and supporting casts. Just as a matter of curiosity how many of the actors who have worked with him have won or been nominated for Oscars ... Ellen Burstyn, Michael Caine, Christian Bale ... this isn't the chicken liver class of actors.

Nicole Kidman, Rachel Weisz, Halle Berry, John Travolta...
The problem is that since 2006, he's only had three films released where he was the lead - Australia, Wolverine and Real Steel - so it's easy for them to forget early promise.

Sounds like he may have seen a cut.

Oscar Podcast with Anne Thompson and Kris Tapley. At the beginning they talk about the new Oscar host Seth MacFarlane. Anne says he's a surprising choice but his name was floating around at the Emmy party. She said he's "not a Steve Martin or a Hugh Jackman and we have to assume they were ahead of him on the list." Then she said "I understand Jackman had scheduling problems." If we ever want to see Hugh host again, he's probably going to have to be doing nothing in the month or two ramping up to the awards. She also said she had fantasies of Hugh and Anne Hathaway hosting. Anne said "Ted" (which Seth directed) was also from Universal and she thinks he may have been a substitution. She also heard the names "along the way" for hosting were Hugh, Steve Martin, Anne Hathaway, Tina Fey. blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/oscar-talk-ep-90

I would love to see Hugh and Anne host the Oscars together. I honestly think that Anne wasn´t bad at all, but James Franco seemed bored/high/both with the constant wtf expression and spoilt it for both of them. I noticed in reviews that they mostly blamed him for the fiasko (I was surprised by that because they usually (unfairly) blame an actress when a movie/anything isn´t successful). I think Hugh and Anne are the only two contemporary actors who could make a good, old-fashioned fun Hollywood movie that they used to make when Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart and Audrey Hepburn were around...

That's what I like too - the Hugh/LM parts either summarized or told where to find them so I don't have to listen to the whole thing. I confess I didn't listen to all of it, just kept moving the needle a bit every few seconds to a part where I think they may have been mentioned.

One other bit was when Anne Thompson talked about having a host who is "classy" and Hugh was one she considered to be classy. The Oscar host is discussed near the beginning of the podcast, but Pat has given a good summary.
