I always thought that being a fan means to accept the actor´s choices, to support him. That´s what I do. Hugh is such a good human being that his film carreer for me became somehow...unimportant? It is only a bonus. He does so much stuff for people around him that the fact he happens to be an actor is a bit irrelevant lately. I am not sure when I got to this conclusion, but I did Also, I was surprised twice, when I misjudged two of Hugh´s projects before they were even filmed (Real Steel became one of my all time favourite movies), and this way, I learnt to be open-minded about things. As a sci-fi geek, I always love a good genre movie over a musical (even tough I like musicals) or some difficult drama. Prisoners was a praised project, yet somehow, I saw it only once and rewatched Real Steel three times. It is all subjective and individual, but I am a fan of Hugh, not just his movie work. As for this place, I spent days here when I first registered (all those years ago), going through photos and videos, saving it all on my disc (which broke and I lost it all, never to be recovered again ) but I never, ever posted it anywhere else and kept it for myself. Even the copy of The Boy from Oz I have is from eBay...so it is sad that probably one of the main reasons this place went sideways was the stealing without a credit to Kristin. As someone who used to run a Stargate website with my text stolen and copied to various blogs and websites (Some of those kids even unaware they *should* link the original source), I understand. I eventually gave up, moved on to other stuff, too. I often disagree with some fans who claim to be fans, yet seem to be crazy that Hugh doesn´t do what they want. Also, about that...red place?...as a relatively easy-going person, who never participated in any of these discussions (cos I know nothing about the conflicts they/you had), I was disgusted to be basically banished by that one person who rules that place now just because I complained about her writing a spoiler about Prisoners and basically spoiling the whole movie for me. I ended up being the "bad" one and even ended up apologizing cos I hate conflicts. I posted on that forum only once or twice ever since but it was not the same. I like this place, even though I post less and less. Maybe because there is not much to talk about. The activity will increas after Hugh will have a couple of movies out again.

If there was more to talk about this topic/thread would not have gained traction and more people would still be participating in general. Aside from the fact that I always want Hugh's films to be box office hits, I don't care about either Pan or Wolverine so it's unlikely I will post about either film.
I disagree that fans claiming to be fans when they are unhappy with Hugh's choices are not true fans. I am among them and I can assure you that I have been a major fan for 10 years!. I am also 100% certain that I would not have become a significant fan had I not seen The Boy From Oz. In 2005 at the Imperial Theater I was certain we were witnessing the birth of a legendary star to rival Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, Paul Newman - you get my drift. His career did not unfold the way we envisioned. It wasn't that we had hopes beyond reason either because he could have done it. Year after year, little by little I/we became disheartened knowing the depth of his talent wasn't being tapped or put to "the highest and best use" as we say in real estate. There are many theories why, personally I think it started with John Palermo, when he lost some important years and never fully recovered. He finally became a household name and 10 years later we are still getting our hopes dashed. Now Hugh is too old for younger parts. Unless you are a Wolverine fanatic there has been plenty to be disappointed about. For myself, I've seen only one Hugh movie more than once, yet I've seen in on stage at least 12 times travelling across a continent to do it each time. I "got" The River and still did not like it, sold my second round of tickets. It's not that I only like him on stage, it's more that I simply don't like a lot of his movies.
The characteristic that we all fell so hard for was Hugh's character and his looks are somehow entwined. He has never veered off center in his personal life, he is exactly the man I always felt he was - Hugh is the real deal. Nor has he ever had one hint of scandal, everyone that meets him gushes effusively over him and most importantly, he has never cheated on a wife of 17 years. Even though he didn't take the path I had in mind, he was worth my time and the reason I hang on.

There's no one way to be a fan. I was more the kind who was willing to follow him anyway because it opened my eyes to new genres. From this, I've seen films and read books that I wouldn't have considered, from Pi to Dracula. One of the reasons I didn't join the red board was that a lot of people there were focused on Hugh's Broadway career almost to the exclusion of all else. However, I have become rather bored with Wolverine. It's not that I don't enjoy the films, it's just that they take a long time and there's little new stuff to research.
My fear is that Hugh is now almost too big a name to take on the kind of interesting projects I'd like to see. In one way, he's unlucky to be Australian. British actors with a comparable level of fame are able to mix in smaller, british (but often Hollywood-funded) films and even TV along with the occasional blockbuster. Australia's film industry is too small to offer many opportunities and if he does an Australian film, it becomes a big deal. I may not have put that well, but just look at the variety of work that Benedict Cumberbatch and Eddie Redmayne are taking on and compare with the opportunities Hugh had at a comparable stage of his career. Or for an american, look at Jake Gyllenhaal.

I totally agree, wombat, on the "no one way to be a fan". I snicker every time I see some noob (okay, it's been over 2-1/2 years, I can call other people that, lol) on Twitter say "Hey, Hugh, I'm your BIGGEST FAN!!!!!".
He's got such a large and diverse fan base that it's unfortunately impossible to have one or even two places for like-minded people to gather to discuss. Facebook, Twitter and IG pages have captured most younger fans, and there is less of a "commitment". There, you can change your handle and profile picture after a few weeks and go off and be the "biggest fan" of some other actor, lol.
Among other things, I like to keep track of where he is or more accurately, where he has been. Twitter and Instagram are wonderful tools for this, and sometimes I find fun pictures and articles and things unrelated to "sightings". That doesn't make me a stalker. I have no interest in finding him. Here, I kept being reminded how weird that is and people "shouldn't" do it. For that and other reasons, I got a bit tired of continuing to post as much here. Many apologies that it seems to have contributed to the overall slow-down of the board.
I'd also like to see him in some more interesting movies. The departure from Collateral Beauty was a true disappointment. I don't know what drives his decision-making, don't know how he is in real life, really don't know anything about the actual man, except that keeping track of his career and other doings and discussing him with other folks has been a very pleasant pastime. I really really hope that, in real life, he's as genuine and happy as he seems to be. He is an amazing talent, not just on stage or film, but - from what I gather - putting people at ease and making everybody he meets feel some little bit of special. For that, he's been worth my attention, regardless of what direction he's gone or will go next.

I never said anything about "true fans" I spoke specifically about two or three cases that I noticed elswhere (IMDB maybe?) where some people said "If he was just listening to his fans". Literally, like this. I should have been more specific, sorry. I was talking about myself and that I follow Hugh mostly because he is the real deal as you called it so it is not about movies anymore. Yes, as a more genre fan (sci-fi geek), I enjoy most of his stuff, even though I will be happy to see him away from Wolverine. Sadly, I have never seen him on stage. I started to follow him closely right after TBFO, sometimes around The Fountain/The Prestige were out. Since then, he performed only on Broadway so there is no way for me to afford it - at least wasn´t cos I was still a college student back then. I wish he would come to London and did that Shakespeare... I agree about John Palermo...he was there, and then he was gone, all that production going nowhere (yet other actors have their companies producing interesting stuff). Maybe he should try to produce again, I think he would be good just on his own.
