I just watched The Hurt Locker and I think I would give this movie to every person (here or anywhere else) who says that our (or anybody´s) soldiers are doing it for money. I know it didn´t show everything but I am glad Bigelow chose just to "show" us, not judge or say her opinion. She just showed how do these guys react and what is their job. In the beginning, I thought "this will be a long movie" but I got into it and I felt the fear from death. It was amazing. I can´t compar Avatar and The Hurt Locker. They are totally different, actually saying opposite things (no wonder Bigelow and Cameron got divorced ;D) but at this point, The Hurt Locker is still inside my mind, slowly accepting it. I forgot Avatar even before I left the theater.

I really really badly want to see The Hurt Locker, and I will soon. I'm very much looking forward to it and interestingly enough, it's now the front runner for the Best Picture Oscar.
See when it was supposedly between Up in the Air and Avatar, I would have easily given it to Avatar but from what I've been reading, The Hurt Locker certainly sounds like it deserves every accolade it's gotten.

I liked both The Hurt Locker and Avatar, but in completely different ways so I wouldn't mind if either won. I'd probably be happy with Kathryn Bigelow for director and Avatar for picture. I wish Jeremy Renner (and Anthony Mackie) were getting more attention. However, I think the spectacle of Avatar deserves recognition. It's quite an accomplishment to put together something of that size and for it to work.
I haven't see Up in the Air, but I expect to be as underwhelmed as I was by Syriana and Michael Clayton. Ok as films go, but not quite as good as a tv mini-series covering similar ground would be.

Up in the Air is loads better than those films you mention Wombat. It's practically Clooney playing himself and overall as a film, it's quite charming with just the right amount of funny and sadness. It's a very good film but put next to Avatar, the scope and magnitude of the two are just incomparable and it makes me think that Avatar should always have the upper hand to Up in the Air. The latter feels very small, as small as "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Juno" and I still don't really get how Clooney got a Best Actor nod for it but whatever.
I just watched "The Blind Side" last night and it was pretty good, a very sweet movie. If I were giving out the awards, Sibide would win Best Actress like it's nobody's business. But since I'm not giving out the awards, it's between Streep and Bullock, I don't know who I would give it to, as both compared to Sibide were not even close.

I certainly agree about Sidibe and Streep/Bullock. I did like Syriana and Michael Clayton and find Up in the Air very different from those. I enjoyed it a lot, but it's hard to compare the three. I don't think it's Oscar-worthy, but the story is more original than Avatar. Visually I think Avatar is great, but plot-wise pretty commonplace; that's why I don't want it to win best picture. I haven't seen Hurt Locker yet, but I want to. I wonder if a lot of these things will split votes and something unexpected will win?

Pundits are actually really thinking that "Inglorious Bastards" now has a big chance at winning in the same way that "Crash" did to upset "Brokeback Mountain" that one year. Because Bastards has a big ensamble cast and will have a lot of support from the actors branch most likely and it being a Tarantino film gets a lot of support as well. But since "The Hurt Locker" has won so many pre curser awards, along with the BAFTA's, shows that a lot of voters are supporting that more so than "Avatar". It will be interesting, certainly more so than last year when we knew from the get go that "Slumdog Millionaire" was going to pretty much sweep.

Does anyone know whether the Jackmans are staying in NYC after this year or moving somewhere else?

Does anyone know whether the Jackmans are staying in NYC after this year or moving somewhere else? Since they bought, the kids are in school, and it's (relatively) easy for Hugh to commute for jobs, I'm guessing they are staying put.

I think if one spends upward of 20 million for a home, one is likely to stay put for a long period of time.

Well, one never knows with that kind of money. Plus, didn't he mention sometime last year that he'd like to live in Italy for a year? Have there been frequent NYC sightings? I haven't seen much in the mags lately.

Have there been frequent NYC sightings? I haven't seen much in the mags lately. You have to keep up with the "where in the world..." thread... we report all his sighting there and yes, he's been in NY after he finished his dealings in LA, Rio and China to name the recent stuff. He was seen in NY last week doing his usual school duty with Ava.

He was also seen Monday picking up Ava from school.

I saw An Education this evening. It was ok but about not much at all. Good performances from Carey Mulligan and the rest of a strong cast. Oddly, the UK DVD has trailers for two films with Robert Pattinson.

I thought it was a very honest film and got the teenage thinking and approach to love just right. Quality wise, not a BP winner by far but enjoyable film.

Not really related to GOOD movies, but I was cruising The Guardian and saw this piece about Uma Thurman's movie 'Motherhood' and it's incredible opening weekend in the UK. It took... wait for it... £88, and was seen by twelve people. So, you know, the next time anyone complains about The Fountain's box office obscurity, just remember that it could always be worse.

OMG that is so sad, 12 people, even sadder is they probably went all together for a big BO push, only to discover they're the only ones watching it.

I just saw How to train your dragon and OMG! I loved it! Avatar didn´t impress me so much at all. This was so magical, funny, sad and cute that I am thinking to go to see it for the second time. I came back home and all I can think of is that "I want to train my own dragon!" ;D The sad thing is that this will be probably treated as "another animated feature", even when it has more soul than Avatar and it will be probably pushed aside by Toy Story 3.

That movie did get some amazing reviews so at least in that respect it was noticed.
I finally saw "The Hurt Locker" and very good it was, though the ending reminds me a bit of *spoiler* The Wrestler *spoiler* and that I kind of don't like but in this context I accepted it more whereas in the latter movie I didn't like it.

I watched "Grand Tourino" a few weeks ago and liked it a lot. Clint was a bit annoying at first with his raspy voice and unlikeable character but that was the point - over the space of the film, I grew to like him a little. I thought the script was really good with just enough background and set up so that the end made sense even though it was a surprise.
I also rented "The Time Traveler's Wife" and enjoyed it, partly because it has so much naked Eric Bana. The episodic nature didn't work as well in the film as the book and the time-travelling got a bit repetitive but it was fairly true to the book.

I saw Clash of the Titans last week since I loved the original one. I saw the regular version, not the converted one to 3D since that's supposed to be awful. I don't *get* what's so great about Sam Worthington - he does nothing for me and his Aussie accent kept creeping in a lot. The movie wasn't that similar to the first movie and I definitely liked the original better.
I wonder how the new Hollywood Star Walk of Fame guy Russell Crowe's movie Robin Hood is going to do next month. Speaking of which - I wonder when Hugh will have his ceremony and if there's a statute of limitations on the timeframe of when the ceremony has to be done after the announcement of getting it. I wonder if it will be for the premiere of Real Steel.
