I wonder if the Oscar telecast ratings will suffer as a result. I have to think so. And did "Argo" really lead the way last year, or are they just mentioning it because it won Best Picture. I thought both Les Mis and Django outperformed it at the box office. I think it was written that way just because it won: Argo: Domestic: $136,025,503 58.5% + Foreign: $96,300,000 41.5% = Worldwide: $232,325,503 Les Mis: Domestic: $148,809,770 33.7% + Foreign: $293,000,000 66.3% = Worldwide: $441,809,770 Django: Domestic: $162,805,434 38.3% + Foreign: $262,562,804 61.7% = Worldwide: $425,368,238 Blockbuster or bust. Many wonderful films are pulled because word of mouth hasn't had a chance to reveal a quiet gem. Our 16 screen Cineplex reserves one screen for small budget or indy films but even Philomena and All Is Lost were pulled in the blink of an eye, before I had a chance to see them. Blockbuster films are rarely my favorite, I can think of only one or two in my lifetime, usually by the time I see them they don't stand up to the hype.
PS. Don't get me started on incessant promos that give the story away. It's impossible to have the element of surprise anymore.

LOL, first they complain about the distasteful process of Oscar campaigning, and THEN they complain when people don't do it.

I wonder if that rules out any "special" presenting/introductory role ie the "heroes" segment. I guess I won't hold my breath.

No need to clog up my DVR any further, at least.

I'm kind of glad, that he won't attend the Oscars this year and hope that he doesn't make a surprise appearance as presenter for something. Of course I hope they show him in their "heroes" segment, but that's all. So I hopefully can skip the Oscars this year and don't have to dvr them.

I am glad as well. I don´t have to stay up until 2:30 in the morning and watch it. I will probably just watch it later in the week but even Ellen as a host isn´t helping. I think she is boring and unfunny (I don´t get her humour, honestly). If they at least hired someone like Craig Ferguson...well, then I would watch it (love that guy)

Well, that's bizarre. I guess the suggestion is that Hugh fucked up, but I doubt anybody but this guy and a few of the other people involved even noticed.

I remember those WTF moments, too. When David Niven remarked on the streaker, I thought sure he was going to say, "And here we have the winner of the Best Short Subject...", but "shortcomings" fit the bill, too. Fun memories.

Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres was interviewed by, I think, "Entertainment Tonight" last night. She was asked if she intended to do a big musical number like Neil Patrick Harris or Hugh Jackman (photos of the two in separate hosting duties were shown). Then Ellen answered, "Uh, I'm not THAT gay."
Oof. And so the rumors will continue (not that they'll likely ever stop, anyway).

I'll give Ellen the benefit of the doubt and imagine she was playing on "big musical numbers" being "gay" (and herself being gay, of course) and not trying to feed into the rumors of Hugh himself being gay. But. Well, I guess you're right, they'll never stop so just best to ignore stuff like this. How funny that I've got the Hugh-as-Peter segment from BOB playing on my computer screen right now. Of course, he handled the medley quite differently in the LA show. Still wondering how he plays it the next time he does his show. And speaking of shows, I wish I could be a fly on the wall in Las Vegas this weekend.

Well, now that Oscar weekend is here, I'm feeling pretty glum. No matter what I've said before, I'll still watch them and not seeing Hugh there will piss me off. Call me spoiled from last year. His name keeps popping up in all these articles, but it's just a mention of him as host, sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a bad (one writer said they "couldn't fathom why" the academy selected him as a host, WTF).
And of course, it being Oscar weekend, there's not even any chance of other news, as if I was hoping for anything anyway. I've even given up the slim hope I had for him to be a surprise introducer of the "heroes" segment, or for god's sake, he might not even feature in the montage, since I realized it's on ABC (slash Disney slash Marvel), and god knows they have a lot of Marvel movies coming up to promote.
Not that I imagine he cares much, but he must be happy to have another gig going on this weekend to just stay away from that scene.

Sue, You think you're grouchy? ... I was looking forward to this year's Oscars for a very special personal reason ... blankandwhite.net/2014/02/28/historical-firsts/ The fact that Hugh didn't win last year when he should have and in all probability won't be there this year is really throwing a monkey wrench into my pleasure. I'm hoping that a couple of bottles of champagne with stifle my urge to throw bricks at the screen during the telecast. :-(

Then it´s a good thing it will be 2:30 in the morning here I gave up on staying up all night watching it. It is not worth it for me this year. Each year, I had someone I wanted to win. This year, I barely saw two of the best picture nominee and three actors I wanted to see won´t be there. Also, honestly, Ellen´s humour is not...really funny. I don´t get her and if they wanted a TV host, Craig Ferguson would have been my first choice An interesting article on CNN... edition.cnn.com/2014/02/27/opinion/seymour-actor-transformations/index.html?hpt=hp_t5

The gal that sits next to me at work was telling me she's going to an "Oscar party" tonight and asked what movies I had seen and who I wanted to win. I told her who I thought would win and why and explained that it was mostly politics, told her about the campaigning, etc. She had this shocked look on her face followed by a few "really???s"....
