Heh, guess I wasn't overthinking it then.
Anybody else think that "nice" Ellen's joke at the expense of Liza Minnelli ("nice job, sir") was particularly nasty?

But I guess it isn't the first time that someone made fun of an audience member at the Oscars. That opening was so boring but that's what people want, comedians! While I'm here, Catherine Martin just won for costumes for The Great Gatsby. Jennifer Lawrence is with Nicholas Hoult in the audience and Michael Fassbender lost Best Supporting to favorite Jared Leto. And Jonah Hill is a two-time nominee?

Was he nominated for that baseball movie? Money Ball? (or, er, Moneyball. thanks, Kristin)

Yes, I think he was nominated for Moneyball, which he was very good in, my opinion of course.

Maybe I didn't get the joke then? I thought she was suggesting that Liza looked like a man playing herself.
Not that Liza looks much like "herself". Likewise, Kim Novak's mouth frightened me.
This "heroes" stuff is different than I expected, with multiple segments focusing on different kinds of heroes. It's okay.

Struck me as a funny joke.

I guess it probably helps if one is aware that impersonators / street performers "playing" different celebs are a Hollywood way of life. (and yes, I know they are done elsewhere, too). Even knowing that, I was mainly surprised by it because Ellen's humor doesn't normally veer to the nasty. Minelli's reaction made me feel uncomfortable. Then again, in a weird way, you could say it was actually a compliment as I assume most impersonators make her look lovely and young again. Heh.
Can't believe they are still getting through the shorts and documentaries. I feel like it's almost my bedtime already.
Okay, guess drag queens as joke fodder is sort of old hat for Liza. From GoldDerby, in a poll about the monologue:

Ah. When did TV performances start figuring into the Oscars?!

Well, two quick glimpses of Hugh from The Wolverine, in the hero's segment, I almost did not expect even that.

I thought I saw three quick flashes of Hugh-- maybe wishful thinking.
Update: Ah, I remember now why my mental count was three: He appeared for a nanosecond on screen during Roger Deakins' cinematography nomination.
I wonder whether Hugh was asked to be a presenter and declined because of his schedule or whatever; or whether he never got the call. I noticed lots of presenters who did not figure in this year's awards circuit.

Kind of bittersweet seeing Paul Dano on stage among the cast of the Best Picture winner.

I'm glad that I haven't even DVRed it. I've already said what I think about McC and I stick to my opinion about him. So it's only and all about politics, campaigning, manipulating, "reinventing", weight loss ... His (and Leto's) win sends the wrong signals imo. What comes next? An actor chops off his arm in front of the camera and talks afterwards everywhere how he had to lose his arm for the art? Every actor "reinvents" and plays the serious artist in the public? And what a "coincidence" that at the very time of Oscar voting "True Detectives" was shown. I have to say that I feel really sorry for Leo right now. He must think "wtf, I lost to this guy? What else I have to do to finally win an Oscar?"

I didn´t stay up to watch it so I will do it later today (or tomorrow). I was pleased to see Cate Blanchett to win who I think is great (even with Sandra, who was also great in Gravity). I don´t know that girl who won the supporting but she also somehow supports the "historical figure/movie or weight loss" thing. But I haven´t seen the movie yet so I am not going to judge the actual performance. I am just glad they didn´t give it to overrated, beloved Jennifer Lawrence, who can´t move a muscle in her face but for some reason, everybody thinks she is a fantastic actress (as much as she is likeable in person, I really think she can´t act, sorry). The actors´ category is sad. The last movie where I actually liked Matthew McConaughey was some silly fantasy where he hunted dragons. I saw most of the movies they presented as "reborn" or whatever and I thought he was the same in them. Maybe I just can´t say when someone is good or not, or it is about a subjective opinion. I am not a fan of DiCaprio but he was really great in The Wolf of the Wall Street but sadly, the awards are not given for a pure acting anymore these days... That said, I am going to watch True Detective because everybody says it is good so I have to try it

He must think "wtf, I lost to this guy? What else I have to do to finally win an Oscar?" Oh boy, does that sum it up!!! Not a *huge* Leo fan, but really.... Who would have thought a certain person would ever win an Oscar. Does this now give him more "clout"? I swear, if he ever shows up on one of those "highest paid" lists.... I saw "12 Years..." and am now reading the excellent book. Glad it won.
