I have a feeling McC may soon be holding an Emmy statuette as well. Last night's almost unbearably tense wrap-up to TRUE DETECTIVE had an 11 o'clock-type scene in which the usually taciturn, contemplative, coiled Rust (McC) finally lets loose a floodgate of emotion you knew had been bottled up since episode one. Actors choose which episode/scene to submit for Emmy consideration, right? If he doesn't choose this one, I'll eat my proverbial hat. And I must admit, if he wins, I'll consider it a more deserving win than for the Oscar. By the way, did anyone see the hilarious send-up of McC's kooky character on SNL this past weekend? It was spot-on and the best thing on the show (OK, which admittedly isn't saying much). But I laughed heartily. www.gossipcop.com/taran-killam-matthew-mcconaughey-snl-video-parody-impression-saturday-night-live/

After that breathtaking hour (I was saying, "I hate this, I hate this"), my husband said it was even better than Breaking Bad. I tried to tell him you can't compare the two, since Breaking Bad was consistently good over five seasons, which is so hard to do, and this one, with only 8 episodes, didn't have that pressure of keeping things believable and interesting over such a long time. But still. Wow. And yes, the MM spoof was spot-on and funny. And an Emmy sure seems likely. (although .... after we went back to watch his Oscar speech, hubby said "he just plays himself", LOL!).

.... after we went back to watch his Oscar speech, hubby said "he just plays himself", LOL!). That's what I'm saying since months. lol He plays himself! I've seen his Oscar speech somewhere online and I've found it so lousy! So full of himself, me, me, me ..., and this phony "inner hero" blah ... To me he sounded again like he plays a role there.

... assuming they get the same high quality of script for Season 2. And that's the main problem. Often the second season isn't so good anymore, and with Hugh's "luck" ... And since the critics always find something to pick at Hugh, they would compare him with McC, and because McC is so overhyped right now, an Oscar winner and the greatest actor who takes so many risks bla bla, Hugh would probably compared unfavourably to McC. Or they would say that he only jumped on the bandwagon or something like that. I'd like to see him in a TV mini-series, but something original would be better imo.

The one complaint I've seen about this season of True Detective that it didn't feature any "strong women" characters. Which isn't entirely true, and I really didn't care, but one response might be to find some strong female characters as leads (or at least as one of them) for season 2. If he somehow did get on board, I agree, Season 2 would be better to avoid, after Season 1 was so acclaimed. Not sure when they would film anyway. Seems likely Hugh would be busy this year although there is a sort of ill-defined (to our eyes, at least) time period between filming Pan and preparing for The River.

My husband and I are FINALLY getting around to watching House of Cards, still just on Season 1, episode 4. Fun stuff, even if I have a hard time believing Kevin Spacey is really a Democratic congressman from South Carolina. But that matters little. I see that Corey Stoll (aka Congressman Russo) is going to be in the cast of the Ant-Man movie, which of course I got alerted to because its opening weekend corresponds with Pan's.
I also see news this week that Spacey is going to play Winston Churchill in a movie. Some indignant Brits were saying an American should NOT play such an iconic British figure. Until others reminded them they were okay with DDL winning an Oscar for playing Lincoln.

Ha! What's good for the goose, as they say.
Anyway, Spacey has spent many years in England as artistic direction of the Old Vic and excels at impressions and accents--he used to do stand-up comedy--so I don't think he'll have much trouble making a "V" sign with his fingers and intoning, "We shall fight them on the beaches...."
I love HOUSE OF CARDS, too--even though, like you, I have to invoke Coleridge's "willing suspension of disbelief" sometimes. But it's the outrageous stuff that makes for deletable high drama.

I really enjoy the conceit of having Spacey break the 4th wall and talk straight to the camera from time to time. It took a bit of getting used to, but I think it's a reminder that it's fun make-believe. Mostly, it makes us feel like we're "in on" his schemes.
BTW, I noticed ASR scribe Keith Huff was a producer and sometimes writer for House of Cards in Season 1. And actually, now I see he's also been involved with Mad Men. I had not realized that.

House of Cards with Spacey is excellent, but I still prefer the original British version starring Ian Richardson www.imdb.com/title/tt0098825/?licb=0.09722530958242714

I love "House of Cards"! I love Kevin Spacey in that role, it's a perfect role for him. and I also love Robin Wright and some others. Unfortunately it wasn't a big success here, it couldn't be a success, because they showed it on late sunday evening at 11.15pm, and the last episodes were shown in the middle of the night right after another. But I hope that season 2 will be shown on another channel though later in the year.

Is anyone watching sci-fi shows or am I the only geek around here? Doctor Who, Continuum, Grimm anyone? You talk about two shows I have on my "watch list" but that list is terribly long...

I watch Doctor Who and have done since the reboot. Of course I watched the original series up to the 1980s, some of it from behind the settee. Probably when I was about 8, I wanted to be "Jamie" who was the one in a kilt who travelled with Patrick Troughton's Doctor. Of course, my memory is rather shakey on those. I probably only really remember from the Jon Pertwee years. I was introduced by the idea of Continental Drift by the Ice Warriors (it was fairly new science with the idea only being accepted during the 1960s). Then there were the giant maggots showing the risks of genetic mutation. It's part of my cultural baggage. I've just started watching Grim. So far I've seen the Red Riding Hood and Three Bears stories. I did enjoy Star Gate Universe and it's a pity it got cancelled. I assume you've seen Dollhouse. It's just hard to find time to watch all this stuff.

Everytime I get home from a convention, I have a list full of TV shows I just "need to watch". I don´t really have time for it as well. I recently watched everything from classic Doctor Who - it took 18 months to watch it all But I saw the second half of Tom Baker´s run and the rest in about 3 weeks because I was at home, sick with a flu I am excited about Peter Capaldi now. Matt Smith really wasn´t my favourite (really, least favourite, even worse than Colin Baker), too young, too goofy, not the greatest actor (imo). Capaldi is a fantastic actor so I can´t wait (I think everybody who follows me on Facebook knows that I am sort of obsessed with news and spoilers right now ) Grimm keeps getting better with each episode. I think they found their way around episode 7 and higher. Season 3 so far is great. Dollhouse is the only Whedon´s show I missed. I can´t stand Eliza Dushku. She is the same type of actress as Summer Glau. Both terribly wooden actresses but Whedon seems to keep casting them I think he never really got over Buffy (and Angel) shadow but there is that "never-to-be-answered" question how would Firefly do if it wasn´t cancelled. I agree about Stargate Universe. My favourite "gate" was Atlantis but is...well, sucked in the last season and when SGU found the way, they cancelled it. I guess SyFy channel needs more screen time for wrestling...

Definitely Doctor Who both original and reboot. Now watching Grimm and Once Upon A Time. Some new shows of the type: Helix, Believe, Almost Human, and Intelligence. Last season Under The Dome and Orphan Black which are due back during the summer.

I watched the first two episodes of Aaron Guzikowski's The Red Road. Very good, if a bit grim and slow to build. But I'll keep watching. I can invest six hours. Some similarities to Prisoners, including a crazed drive down a darkened road. And two main characters - one a cop - who are working together but not entirely. This time it's the cop character who is in the deeper struggle to keep his family together, bending rules along the way. Sort of interesting. Finished watching this show, what a disappointment. The last two episodes just stretched my belief way way too much. I have to wonder if they had to compress it more than originally conceived because, for obvious reasons, I thought that Guzikowski's scripting abilities were a lot better. It just seemed that everything happened too conveniently for the purpose of setting up the ultimate confrontation. And some other things just didn't make any sense at all. Very irritating. Oh, well, they can't all be great.

I finally got to watch "Hustle". UK TV pond is really small so I saw a lots of familiar faces there. I am getting to season 8 and I have to admit, I liked first four seasons the most. After they changed half of the main cast, it is not the same anymore. The new people are very nice and likeable but it is just very different and not as much fun as it used to be.

One thing I'm enjoying about Grimm is that the actors are unfamiliar. Though I recognised one from Deb's short "Standing Room Only" and another from SGU. I'm now on to season 2, so I think I'm hooked.
Have you seen "State of Play" (tv series not film)? It has lots of familiar faces including James McAvoy.

Of course I have But I watched it because of John Simm back then (he is brilliant) but there are many great british actors involved in it. I was a little itchy about the US remake...or any US remake of UK show (I thought people in the US speak English ). Yes, Grimm is Portland based (the actual filming is there) so I think it helps to cast some unknown people. But there were some familiar faces recently, but not really famous (except one, I think but she is not really "that" famous anymore) Season 3 will be over soon (sadly) and I have to say, they keep getting better because they basically ditched the "case of the week" format and if there is one, than it hints something from the mythology.
