Also in the annoying category- the NPH TonyAwards yielded a best director for Glenn Weiss. Gracious congrats from HJ on his twitter. Nothing against the director of course- just my petty resentment at the NPH can do no wrong sentiment.

I rest easily in the belief that there is more grace in Hugh's left pinkie than most Hollywood or TV industry types would know what to do with. And his willingness to use that graciousness to put a positive spin on damn near anything is something I wish more people in this world possessed. It cannot be as natural and easy as he makes it look.

Really well-done In Memoriam segment on the Emmys tonight, leading into Billy Crystal's tribute to Robin Williams. Best part of the evening so far. Meanwhile, relieved that MM did not win. While I enjoyed him on that show, it would have been all too much. I completely forgot about that or I would have DVR'd it since I went to bed but I'm sure it's on the web. I must be the only one in the world that didn't care for Williams, I thought he was annoying. And ditto about MM - when did he become one to fall over all of a sudden? I did see him with Woody Harrelson starting to present and turned the station.

I was confused because MM didn't seem to even be nominated. Then I discovered True Detectives isn't a "mini-series", it's a "drama series". Really? Nice to see Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman winning, though.

I remember watching the Mets game he spoke about (the less said about me having to watch the Mets growing up, the better) and it was one of the most hysterical spontaneous bits of comedy I have ever heard. The two Mets broadcasters were in hysterics for an entire inning because they were so funny. I remember it well because it was so funny.

I remember sitting in the mezz at the rehearsal at Radio City that Tonys Sunday morning thinking, damn, this is probably the best written/executed opening for a Tonys ceremony that I have ever seen; why couldn't Hugh have hosted that year? Arrgghh--that it was handed to Harris. I guess those writers were either not interested or not available for this year's less-venerated edition. Crummy luck.

Nice to see Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman winning, though. The only problem with them winning is they weren't there to accept their awards, so that always takes away from the moment. Re True Detective, since it's an anthology, and will have another season - albeit with new cast and storyline - I guess that's how they classified it as a drama. I have to give them kudos for doing that, actually, as many shows have gone the other direction, bending over backwards to be considered a mini-series and therefore face ostensibly easier competition.

I thought the tribute to Robin Williams was appropriate, not at all maudlin, and they didn't give short shrift to the many other amazing talents who were lost this year. The song was quite beautiful, too. It contrasted with the awkwardness of the Oscars' weird "let's focus a lot on these 4 people" thing or whatever that was this year.
Meanwhile, it also made me think about how the Tony broadcast was greatly diminished by not including such a segment. Even in a night that is meant to be celebratory, it is entirely appropriate, and often a highlight of the show, to pause and remember. I really wish the producers had seen fit to either extend the telecast or cut something out, even if it meant seeing less of Hugh.

You know what I would love? For a month to go by on this forum and no one actually mentions Neil Patrick Harris in any way, shape or form. That would be bliss.

Ha, I agree. I actually didn't even hear him get mentioned last night, LOL. I guess I was only half paying attention. The Emmys have always been maddening in the way they tend to honor the same things year after year after year. It's like voters who aren't sure just go with the least controversial option as a default. Nothing against Modern Family/Ty Burrell, Julia Louis Dreyfus, or Jim Parsons, but Ricky Gervais had it right!
That said, I had ZERO problem with Breaking Bad sweeping through the drama category. It was a great show from the start which (and this is much more rare) maintained or even increased in quality through each season AND went out with a great finale. That alone meant it deserved all the awards it got last night.

Has anyone seen a tv series called "Top of the Lake"? It's directed, produced and co-written by Jane Campion and stars Elizabeth Moss and also has David Wenham. It's set on South Island, New Zealand - the scenery is stunning but the people are scary. After one episode, I'm not sure what it is. Probably closer to True Detectives than Columbo.

Yes, I really liked it. I loved Elisabeth Moss in it. And indeed it's definitely closer to True Detective than Columbo. It's another one as well that starts somewhat slowly and then picks up as you get to know more about the characters. Top rate.

Yes it was on Sundance Channel. Love Holly Hunter and the show is intriguing. Stay with it creepy and all.

That´s how I like it. It had only a little over two hours! Straight to business, no holding up by singing, dancing and guest stars that didn´t make sense. I have nothing against a little singing and dancing but it was a bit too much last year. The tribute to Robin Williams was very touching but not over the top. They also showed what a genius he was. I have nothing against Breaking Bad winning it all. I think I was one of the few people who actually watched it when there were only about 4 episodes of Season 1 out And then suddenly, everybody watched. So...I watched BB before it was cool I was thrilled to see (however briefly) Scott Bakula. That guy is incredibly sexy even with grey hair. Yum. I generally ignore a comedy (except ten episodes of TBBT) so I don´t have opinion on this - I know that at least four people in that category were some of my favourite actors in general so anybody would be a good winner imo. The In Memoriam segment was one of the saddest in years...so many, and many of them too soon. P.S. I want Sarah Paulson finally to win something! P.P.S - I loved the Game of Thrones jokes

LOL Unlike some who can not forgive her for leaving her children, I find the fact that Hugh appears to have a good relationship with her one of his endearing qualities.

I watched Breaking Bad from episode 1 straight on through to the end. I very rarely start in on a show unless I see the first episode first.

I know Hugh adores his father for very good reasons and was hurt by his mother's departure, but I imagine he has come to an understanding of all the pressures that made her leave. There was one interview where he said his father gave him the advice of paying attention to Deb and being aware of what she needed. When you consider five children in 8 years, 10000 miles from home, married to a rising executive probably concentrated on his career, the depression that followed on after Hugh etc. She still stayed for eight years after the "baby" until he was safely in school. There is always more to a family story than anyone can know from a distance.

I watched Breaking Bad from episode 1 straight on through to the end. I very rarely start in on a show unless I see the first episode first. Isn´t it a normal way how to watch any show? I mean, most TV shows get here with a few months delay (if we are lucky), or years delay (if we are not) or never (unfortunately, it happens most of the time). So I always start with episode 1 bacause I usually get it in one package of a few seasons I don´t think that with BB, you can just jump in. It is not Law and Order or any other procedural. The change of Walt´s character is the most fascinating when you watch it from the beginning (the same goes for Jesse). I just think it is sad that only 7 drama shows were nominated...there were so many really good shows this year...if only any Academy in the world didn´t ignore genre shows (yes, I am talking even about sci-fi or mystery). The fact that they discovered Game of Thrones is a little miracle (and GOT deserves the praise).

Ha, I guess I'm showing my age, but it's only in recent years that you really could watch every TV show from the first episode, unless you were quite dedicated. In the case of BB, I really did watch episode 1 that first night and was hooked. Even with the ability to watch shows after the fact, I still prefer to watch any interesting show's first episode when it airs (or perhaps on DVR) and make my own decision about it rather than catching up after a show has caught some buzz, which I almost never do. I realize it's different for you, when your favorite shows are all from different countries. Thank goodness for on-line and packaged options!!

Really digging The Knick after three episodes. Even with the grim subject matter, there actually is subtle humor and the characters are developing in ways I wouldn't have predicted. I particularly like that the black surgeon who struggles mightily against 19th century mores is depicted as having human flaws just like everybody else.
Also, this week's episode of Ray Donovan was perhaps the best one yet. I thought after last season that the show was in danger of developing too many barely-related story-lines just to keep cast members occupied, something that really plagued shows like Dexter, True Blood and Homeland after a while. But this week's ep tied everything back together in a great way. To a soundtrack of 80s music, LOL. And it ended up with Liev Schreiber dancing, bad-80s style. Great stuff.
